cephalopods of the day: wunderpus, market squid, and the veined octopus!

happy holidays to all of my cephalopod readers. this time i'll do another big one, as my gift to the cepah lovers on spacehey. today i'll be covering certain cephalopods with a cheeky festive tie-in. however i have to admit its pretty hard, finding a xmassy tie-in for some critters that are so otherworldly, but i hope you like the little guys i'm showing you today!

the wunderpus is a fantastic, newly discovered species of octopus commmonly confused with mimic octopuses. their ribbon-like arms resemble candy canes, and can vary from a rusty orange to a bright red. females grow arm spans up to about 16 inches. their interesting arms also contribute to interesting hunting techniques, with one of them being known as "web casting". the colours on a wunderpus allow it to mimic colourful coral species quite well, so it flails its arms in the air and captures any passerby fish or crustaceans.

the market squid is a much more humble creature, being a small (no more than 19cm in length), pale squid that is common along coasts in north and south america. despite their harmless look, the last thing a market squid would want to see is a larger market squid. they eat pretty much anything they can... including EACHOTHER!! yes, these squishy little icicles are cannibals. i can imagine that can get pretty messy when adults move to shores to hunt, as groups of these squid can reach into the millions. that's also what makes them a very popular choice of squid for the fishing industry.

the veined octopus (also known as the coconut octopus) has a beautiful dark reddish-brown body, and bright white suckers which resemble rows of mini lights. these guys are also known as the coconut octopus because they have been observed to use coconuts as tools in the wild, which actually makes them the first known instance of cephalopods using tools in natural environments. they do this to build a defensive "shell" to conceal from predators. these guys have also been observed walking across the sea floor bipedally in order to move with its shell still held in place. smart !

anyways cepha-lovers, that will probably be it for my cephalopod contributions this year. i hope you all have wonderful celebrations, and i will see you next year!
