I honestly think that "edge" or "being edgy" was better in the past compared to how it is now. When I say "edge", I'm talking about like, Newgrounds, Something Awful, early internet, nu-metal edge. Like the kinda person who draws stuff that's violent or would otherwise be considered edgy in that sense, characters smoking weed, while blasting Linkin Park on their pc or stereo, that's the good kinda edge. But being edgy now likely means you think spamming gore or saying the n-word is the funniest thing ever created, it's total bullshit and not what edge should be. Draw some character with an edgy design with a backstory about how he was a demon re-incarnated or some shit, make an animation where video game characters kill each other, go listen to Korn, anything is a million times better than parroting some bs said by "dude-bro" misogynistic podcasters or "ironically" hating on minority groups.
Not to sound like an old man (bc I'm not old) but seriously.

i think its because the "edge" you describe is now considered normal -- near everyone smokes weed nowadays, so thats no longer something edgy unless its a pothead who makes weed their whole personality [still not edgy, just annoying] so people tried making a "new" type of edge which is moreso just.. cringe. in an attempt to seperate themselves from the now ""normies""
i make somethings
Edge stopped being edgy and normies started pretending they were edgy, and now 'edge' doesn't mean anything :(

if you draw a edgy oc no one really cares. if you post a edgy rant about your twitter enemies no one really cares. if you say the n word everyone freaks out. what you're describing is a change in the edgy meta. the game of edgy has changed

Probably changed with internet culture. Now that we’re exposed to an infinite amount of media and ideas, edge was blended into the horrid movements that can now gain larger platforms than ever before. The old internet was still very limited and niche, now any political movement or ideology is bigger than ever. It also would depend on whatever is trendy. Newgrounds and Korn and all that you mentioned aren’t nearly as popular now as in the 2000s - you know what I mean, they’re nostalgic but being overtaken by newer software and music.
I’m also going to suggest that your definition of edge might be referring to another type of movement. I’ve always defined edge as the latter half, disgusting mindsets towards minorities and all of that just to be “funny” or whatever. That’s just what I grew up understanding what being “edgy” was.
What you’re describing might be something entirely different, maybe.

Yeah very true, and there probably is a proper term for the edge I'm thinking of (the earlier/better kind), I just don't exactly know what that term would be, so I just consider it edge, since people always mention "2000s edge" so I just use that when referring to things like that.
