Call of duty is a yearly franchise, and while others view the franchise as a cash cow long milked dry, and maybe one that was never that good to begin with, I view Call of duty as an amazing franchise. Sure, the series has had some downs, but the highs far outweigh the lows in my opinion. And talking for this year's release, many are writing it off as bland, specifically the campaign, and I'd like to disagree with that.
While not the best call of duty game, I'm willing to go as far as to say that Vanguard is the best call of duty since the much underappreciated Black Ops 4, but instead of speaking on the whole game, I just want to speak on the campaign and my enjoyment.
So yes, I will say that Call Of Duty Vanguard's campaign is very fun. The gameplay mechanics added to differentiate each of the playable characters, such as Ace Pilot Wade's focus feature or Arthur's rallying ability, gives the campaign a lot of variety in game play. The shooting feels great, and it's really fun to experience all sides world war 2, something Call Of Duty WWII, in my opinion one of the worst games in the series, forgot to do. There is always enjoyment to be had in blowing up tanks, taking hills on D-Day, blowing up carriers at midway, and defending Stalingrad during the German invasion(although not as good as WAW's interpretation of Stalingrad). One major gripe with the campaign however is that it feels rather constricted when compared to other games in the franchise, specifically Black ops 2 and Black Ops Cold War. Both of those games had an almost open world with the amount of things you could do before completing the level. And unfortunately, Vanguard doesn't live up to the example those two games set. I couldn't begin to count the amount of invisible walls I ran into trying to explore off the beaten path, especially in Wade's mission. But overall, the campaign is very fun to play through and if you just want a very solid shooter experience you'll find it.
Now the story is something else. Coming right off the back of Cold War's brilliant story, does Vanguard live up to one of the best stories Call Of Duty has ever told? No. Unfortunately, the story here feels really generic and sometimes uneventful. While yes, you do get to experience all the major conflicts of the war, you experience them through flash backs, which takes away the tension on what will happen to your group of characters. For example, you know Polina will kill Steiner because if she hasn't, why would she even be part of the group in the first place. And I feel that this really goes for all of the cast. Now the set pieces and character moments you experience aren't bad by any means. For example, I really enjoyed Lucas and his friends, but I would have much rather focused on them before learning of where Lucas ends up. But outside of the flash backs for the characters, the story isn't stunning. An evil German wishes to continue the Nazi party. Big whop. Honestly, the only time I really got excited was during the final moments of the campaign, where the characters name drop "Nova 6" and "Aether", something that should be recognizable to any long time fan, especially fans of zombies. Overall though, the story isn't bad, but isn't anything that will blow you away. And while I found some enjoyment, I can't say it is one of the best stories the series has to offer.
Overall though, Call Of Duty Vanguard's campaign is a fun time. While the story isn't revolutionary, it isn't bad by any means and good gameplay mechanics that keep things fresh and interesting, I would say that it is defiantly worth a play through if you find yourself a copy of the game.
