Part 1: THE MASON
Thunder clapped as the rain pounded the roof. Wind was blowing fiercely and lightning filled the angry clouds. Atop the largest hill in the valley stood an old hotel, fire engines wale as the flames grow larger on the west wing.
The following morning, Billy prepared his cereal and clicked on the TV. The news reporter stood outside in a gust of wind, "Reporting to you live from what was once the Mason Hotel..." Billy paused his chewing to turn the volume up,"Now engulfed in flames, fire crews are saying that it will be a total loss, and that the cause is likely to be from a lightning strike. It is said that the building did have a caretaker, but his whereabouts are unknown at this time." Billy rapidly draws the window blinds up to view the Mason. "What the hell are you talking about Karen? I am right here and the hotel is fine. Gotta love the drama with the fake wind and clouds on set there too. Ha living witness of fake News!" Billy ranted to himself for a bit as he shut off the TV, gathered his things and slammed the door shut behind him.
Billy jiggles the keys into the old door and it swings open freely. The stone foyer has a couple stairs leading to the service desk, an open lobby with taxidermied bears overlooking the old restaurant. A few vacant rooms that were once businesses. The building is old, but well kept it could easily bring in a healthy income to some rich snob with enough ambition to run a hotel.
He whistles as he strolls through the empty building flipping on the lights as he walks down the hallway. The light above him flickered and went out, so Billy jogged down the stairs to the maintenance room. He gathers a new bulb and reaches for the ladder, a spider slowly inching toward his hand Billy draws back rapidly. Cringing slightly he pulls his boot off and smashes the spider.
Thousands of kin burst from underneath the boot scurrying up Billy's arm onto his face and into his hair. Screaming loudly, Billy runs out the door to the water hose he is able to turn it on and douse himself. He pulls his shirt off and throws it onto the ground.
Cursing to himself, he returns to the maintenance room to find dry rags and a can of Raid. He sprays as many as he can see then makes a call to the exterminator.
