Do people even know the difference between Idolising a criminal and being interested in true crime?

The true crime "community" on this site, aka a bunch of teens role-playing as racists and murderers for fun, is genuinely disgusting. They post photos of horrible people and fascist imagery to the point of obsession - how tf is this OK?

I understand being interested in crime and real-life tragedy for reasons like recording history or researching crime stats, but idolizing murderers, r4p1sts and mass sh00ters is awful. It's disrespectful to the victims and their families and normalises the destruction of humanity.

I am aware that some of these profiles are troll accounts, but I worry that some are genuinely misguided people focusing on the wrong part of true crime.

True Crime is not meant to be idolized. True Crime is something we learn from so we can understand what causes horrible events like these and how we can prevent them happening as a species.

These people you're idolizing aren't some "quirky fictional character" - they're real people who did horrible things and caused death, disability, and trauma for many people. They should not be looked up to - no matter the reason they did it, they are gross, disgusting individuals.

I hope you're ashamed of yourselves and if you're not, I hope you feel it soon.

I wonder what causes young people to go down this path of specifically doing this because unfortunately this isn't new to me, I had a friend in high school (this was 2015) who would talk and joke about the columbine shooters and even draw them, as if they were fictional characters to like. I haven't seen her since then but I really, really hope she got out of that.

it could be a number of factors. unstable homelife is one that often gets brought up, but i feel like there's more to it than that. glorification of violence in modern media or more likely, desensitisation to said violence, perhaps? there could be many different reasons honestly.

Thank you for saying this!!! I hope the people who need to read this will come across it since there are so many misguided people on here. I saw a post idolizing a terrible killer just a day or two ago, and it was really disturbing. Even if it was a joke, I wish people would understand that it isn't okay. :(

Anyway, have a good day!!

Thank you for your lovely comment- I'm so glad I'm not the only one taking issue with how these people are acting right now.

I hope you also have a good day!
