ok so basiclaly i love undertale so much because of the story it’s so AAAAAAAHALHISOJSHOJHSLJH
my favorite parts of undertale:
- the lgbtq rep
- the references
- humanizing the monster race (haha funny wordplay)/making the world feel real & genuine
- alphys’s character and her parallels to real issues
- frisk’s name reveal/their anonymousness
- flowey’s whole character arc/story
- papyrus
- sans, flowey, temmie, and asgore all remembering timelines/deaths
- every small subtle detail about things we shouldn’t even care about
- the anagrams
- the whole story about the amalgamates
- oh my god this game is perfection
so here i’m gonna comment on every one of these things i listed:
The LGBTQ+ Representation
Oh my god, I love the rep so much, especially because they don’t make their queerness a major aspect of the characters, instead just making it a natural, not too focused part of their character as any character trait/aspect should be. I also like how it doesn’t just say the characters are queer, no, it shows (I also love the fact of how well undertale follows the “Show, don’t tell” method.).
Alphys & Undyne
Like how when you meet Alphys and Undyne, you have no idea they’re super duper girlkisser for eachother, no, you first meet their official selves (royal scientist, royal guard.), then we see what’s going on in their lives. The reason why they focused so much on Alphyne in the first place is because of how that was something important going on in their lives at the moment, something we just managed to end up helping them with. If it weren’t so important at the part of their lives we meet them at, we would’ve seen way less of all that. Moving on from Alphys & Undyne.
The Non-binary Characters
The representation with these is so natural, people even forget most of these characters use they/them. Even though that’s upsetting, it shows just how naturally non-binary characters can be introduced to many kinds of games. For Frisk, it’s shown through the entire story, making them a great protagonist in their neutrality. The fact it isn’t even distinctly mentioned as something odd or out of the ordinary is also so validating. For Chara, it’s pretty much the same as everything I mentioned beforehand, as well as the fact their whole family is so normal and okay with it (adding onto the last point). With Napstablook and Monster Kid, it’s so much more subtle that everyone ends up forgetting they don’t both use he/him. Not to mention the vast majority of the random encounter monsters, which all use they/them. People may argue that’s due to the fact that we don’t know these characters enough to conclude a gender, but if that’s true, then why do some random encounter monsters use pronouns other than they/them?
The Trans Characters
Mad Mew Mew and Mettaton are insanely good characters, for many reasons. First of all, for Mad Mew Mew, you’d expect her character arc to be less focused on her trans-ness, but that ends up being pretty much half her story. Not that that’s a bad thing, I just like the change in pace. I love how her whole character is too, showing off a nice angry character for once. The fact that this persists despite her transition also debunks a lot of transphobic claims. The other half of her character arc being the fact that her cousin (previously possessing ruins dummy) got scared out of the thing they were possessing, so she wanted to fight for them. The fact she even did that shows she’s not just a full-on angry character, but one who cares.
For Mettaton, how he cares about Napstablook honestly makes me cry. How he still cares about Napstablook so much, and how he's sad and has some regret about leaving his old life behind, oh my god. Maybe I'm a little biased tho-
