Sorry if this feels like base level analysis, i'm writing it for fun and my friend who hasn't watched Hannibal is reading it so I want to make it as understandable as I can. I may post more of this another time, cause this is just one paragraph from it.
Hannibal views his victims as swine. This is established throughout the show very thoroughly. Not only does he view them as swine, but he seems to view everyone as swine. That is, except for Will. He may have seen Mischa as more than a pawn in his game, but she couldn't truly accept his monster. Despite his kindness towards others, like Alana and Abigail, they are still nothing but pieces in a game that he can manipulate. One may even go as far to say that Will is seen that way too, but I believe there is more to it. Hannibal does not feel shame or remorse, so he does not feel bad for the pain he needed to inflict upon Will, but he isn't cruel and uncaring for him. Hannibal views Will as an equal, he just needed Will to see him that way too. He needed to force Will's Becoming. In his mind, he needed to hurt Will to get him to accept Hannibal, and truth be told he was right. Will was law enforcement. He believed helping the weak and locking away criminals was the best thing. Even with this, Will had a darkness inside of him that Hannibal saw and wanted to exploit. Unlike Freddy Lounds, who saw the darkness and found it ugly, Hannibal wanted Will to accept it and join Hannibal in it. Because of the combination of his empathy disorder and his darkness, Will was the only person able to see Hannibal for who he truly was and still be ok with it. Abigail was able to see him and accept him, but she wasn't meant to survive. She was only there as a tool to torture Will and force his Becoming. Her death was inevitable.
