Game Review - Tales of Arise

Mama Mia, here we go again

Tales of Arise is currently the latest entry in the "Tales of" franchise which I'm gonna get it out of the way now, I haven't played any of the other ones.

I don't have much to say about this game other than the fact that my feelings about it are really really REALLY conflicted.

So let's get into it

Gameplay(5/10):

The game has a simple overworld where you walk around and initiate combat by coming in contact with enemies which then transitions into combat in an arena.

The combat is pretty simple but it can sometimes feel overly complicated(I'm looking at your Rinwell)

During combat the player can swap controls between different characters with each of them having unique weapons and abilities.

During combat you usually rely on combos that connect your main attacks to your abilities, you can use your abilities at any point during your regular attack combo which uses mana. Your mana then replenishes when your combo ends and gives you a slight bit
of end lag so you can't just combo infinitely.

This combat sounds interesting but it gets stale around the middle of the game where every enemy just feels like the last one or unreasonably annoying to deal with.

Story(3/10):

This game's story was less than mediocre. Not terrible but definitely bad. But there was one thing that was god awful about it and that's the ending. I can't go into details on why it was bad but Jesus Christ this game's ending was so embarrassingly bad with you thinking "WHAT, THAT WAS THE ENDING???"

Other than that, the game had one force driving me forward into the story instead of just dropping it, and that is the banter.

In each area of the game, there's a button you can press that lets you hear the main characters have a little chatter about the area they're in, what they're doing or just whatever ongoing conversation they're having with each other. This was my favorite part of the game, hearing the characters blabber about stuff and them bickering during the regular story itself was also entertaining.

Music(8/10):

This is where my complaining comes to a halt because this game has a really pretty soundtrack with a couple songs that I still listen to this day. While a lot of the soundtrack isn't really memorable, they're still great to listen to in game and the memorable ones will stay in your playlist for a long time.

Overall(4/10):

Tales of Arise truly was an exhausting game with repetitive gameplay, an uninteresting story and a terrible ending which was only bearable thanks to a single feature that let you hear the main characters talk to each other and a nice soundtrack.

Would I recommend this game to anyone? No, not at all.
Would I discourage them if they wanted to play it? Also no.

As I said in the beginning, I have really conflicted feelings about this game. As much as it was miserable to play through, the relationship between the main cast is keeping me from totally hating this game.

If you can somehow fully enjoy this game, all power to you. I truly want to enjoy it but sadly there's too many flaws.

Thank you once more for reading, I have no idea what the next review will be on so I can't give a teaser for it here lol :>

Another great review! I don't know why I like reading these, I don't play video games a lot but this was still enjoyable.

Thank you for enjoying them! I love writing them even tho it's just me rambling while trying to sound half profession lol

I think that sort of semi-professional rambling lends itself to a nice writing style. It's kind of loose but not stream of consciousness.
