The last of the melodies were tracked yesterday morning. And then as a bonus, I got to add some neat noises to songs. I love making noise! And on top of that, yesterday was a shorter session. The last couple were pretty long, felt that ear fatigue set in and it's not fun. Everything sounds like it's under water. But now that I won't be back in the studio until June 10 to track solos, I can decomp... » Continue Reading
Laid down all the rhythm guitars this past Wednesday and it felt great! As for the melodies today, well, um...not so great. It's like they say, if you want God to laugh, tell Him your plans. I had all my ideas arranged, ready to do a slam dunk. But nope. Everything I played fell apart. Things sounded great at home but that's my house. Not the studio, where I am under an electron microscope. Nothi... » Continue Reading
All the drums were done last Saturday. The bass took a day and a half, which is still very good. Yesterday, we started recording my guitar parts, as far as rhythms and some harmonies. Harmonies?! On a Steve Bello record?! Not the first time I did them but not something I do quite a lot. One song (the title track) was begging for harmonies that would climb and build tension. I call it my "evil Bria... » Continue Reading
As of Saturday May 6 at 11am, recordings began for my ninth album. Time really flies because I was at the same studio with the same drummer two years ago. Scary, huh? This time, it's a power trio so it's nice to have Brian Smith on bass (along with Mike Sabatini on drums). Makes things a lot tighter, run smoother, and sound HEAVIER! Drums were done today, so next weekend it's onto bass parts and ... » Continue Reading
The last rehearsal just happened tonight. This Saturday, we start recording my ninth studio album. We've been spit-shining eight new songs since December last year. If you ask me, that's pretty damn good. Most bands take a month to do one song. We have eight ready to be slapped down. And away we go... » Continue Reading
Bet you heard that keyboard riff in your head? Sorry (not really!) Had rehearsal last night, and true to form, the songs are air tight and the vibes are flowing nicely (in metal?!) Next week will be the last rehearsal and then starting on May 6, we begin recording my ninth album. Let that sink in for a minute. NINTH ALBUM? Holy moly...I recorded my debut album TWISTED METAL in 2003, which was 20 ... » Continue Reading
Had rehearsal tonight (since we were off last week), and after shaking some rust off, we were firing on all sixes! Two more to go before the recording! Hard to believe, huh? I can't believe it either. Been working on these songs since December and the time is fast approaching to commit the music to tape (or would it be mp3?) These songs started off as very rough guitar-only demos recorded in my ba... » Continue Reading
I should be at NAMM. Obviously I'm not. So what happened? Ibanez sends me a badge automatically. But this time I didn't see one. I figured "Okay I am not invited" (which would have REALLY sucked). So I decided to check the spam folder and... The badge was THERE?! This never happened before. I told them that somehow the badge got in that folder. Even if I received the badge earlier, I still wouldn'... » Continue Reading
Six days without a blog. Am I getting my mojo back? Perhaps! I've not written about rehearsals in a bit because there's really nothing to discuss. But last night's rehearsal was THE BEST one we have had to date. Everything was air-tight, the grooves were locked in, and the metal was paint-peeling! Mike and Brian are a ferocious rhythm section, that's for sure. No rehearsal next week (huh?) because... » Continue Reading
Going for a world record here: haven't blogged in 12 days now. Last time was 11. The bar has been raised. Honestly not too much to talk about. Rehearsals are still kicking ass, the songs are coming together a lot tighter. When we hit the last note and there's dead silence, that means we're nailing everything down. We have a date set for recording but I'm not posting it because, as you all know, t... » Continue Reading
Wow! My dad was right when he said that time goes faster as you get older. And that you lose track of time along the way. I forgot to blog about last weekend's show!! I filled in on guitar (of course) with the cover band Supernova, and it was definitely a WILD night. Black River Barn (Randolph NJ) is small, and the crowd looked like sardines. Was insane seeing all these bodies dancing, carrying on... » Continue Reading
Well, last night my trio finally worked on the eighth and final demo. But I am constructing a solo acoustic piece which will bring the tally to nine songs. So if I remember correctly, this will be the first album with nine songs... And it's my ninth album... Hmmm... This particular song is WAY different from the rest of the album. While we all can agree that this is the heaviest music I've ever wr... » Continue Reading
