Portugal was not seen as a major force in either of the World Wars, but saw service on the Western front and in Africa

The horrors of war are never completely gone from human existence, active involvement is the saddest of occasions, but to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of liberty. In England, Great Britain and Ireland, the British Commonwealth, and throughout the world, a festival of remembrance is observed so that the great sacrifices are never forgotten.

It is a sombre time for everyone involved, and in England the monarch leads the solemn observances of these sacrifices, prayers and the placing of flowers in remembrance, and the sense of gratitude the nation has to its fallen in numerous wars, but especially the First World War in which so many were lost.
