I would say this spam is very recent. Started up a week or two ago.
my friend suggested that the site has become a target due to the lack of verification needed for an account? and also the existence of the "cool new people" tab is being used to their advantage unfortunately.

As long as I can remember, if a website is small it can be a target, and it not having precautions in place will give trolls a reason to target it.
