what is a childrens rights activist?
simply put, its someone who advocates for liberation of children and youth. a child is defined as anyone under the age of 18 (i consider "youth" to mean more teenager though). this includes things like protection from violence and harm, right to shelter, food and clean water, saving children from wars, and all that other stuff.
what do you do?
people advocate for childrens rights in several different ways, like protests and making zines/leaflets. personally, i make cartoons and zines about the matter. i also try to raise awareness through social media.
how are childrens rights under attack?
according to amnesty, around 150 million girls and 71 million boys are sexually assaulted every year. around 41% of girls in least developed countries are married before theyre 18. one in six children globally live in extreme poverty. the majority of american parents agree that a parent using physical discipline on a child is sometimes acceptable. no us state meets child rights standards. i could go on and on, but i think you get the gist.
what is your political ideology?
none. any ideology that advocates for the rights of all children (yes, this includes queer kids), i am that ideology.
how long have you been interested in childrens rights?
as a child, i felt completely ignored and isolated from everyone else. this was likely amplified by the fact that i had undiagnosed autism. also, when i was 9, i saw a mother abusing her toddler in a cafe, which sparked my interest on this and shifted my perspective on how kids are treated greatly. ive been learning about childrens rights ever since.
what about parents rights?
parents have the right to raise their children the way they want to raise their children. children have the right to not be hurt, abused, neglected, harmed in anyway in the process of growing up. if your parenting style abuses or neglects your child, that is not your right. you have no right to cause harm to a defenceless being. the fact that this even has to be said in the modern world is mind boggling, but somehow it does.
are you against discipline?
im against harmful and oppressive discipline, not discipline altogether. this means i am against things such as corporal punishment, psychological shaming, and any punishment that is likely to cause harm to the child or oppress the child.
do you support queer kids?
of course! i was one, and in primary school i heard plenty of homophobic and transphobic language, and it was really disheartening to hear those things even though i hadnt quite figured myself out yet. do i think a 3 year old needs a sex change? no, and the fact that saying you support gay/trans children makes some people automatically think you support sex changes for tiny children is the problem. i fully support trans and gay children, no matter who they might be or what their background is.
this is basically all i have for now, again dont feel bad about asking more questions in the comments and ill add them here
