230801

blue (2002) dir. hiroshi ando

★★★★

this was just beautiful. it's slow, quiet and some might even call it boring but it's so honest and sincere and that's what makes it work. the dialogue is limited and soft, but the silence is what speaks the loudest and it makes you feel. it's intimate and genuine. this is a film about falling in love, as well as learning to let go. the fact that this is available for free on youtube blows my mind.

the 40-year old virgin (2005) dir. judd apatow

★★★

i went into this with pretty low expectations, i just wanted to watch it for shits and giggles. turns out, it really was not bad, and i actually ended up enjoying it? it absolutely screams 2005, without looking at the release year you would 100% be able to tell. the comedy doesn't land completely at all times and there's some jokes i definitely didn't like but overall an enjoyable comedy! good luck to any straight white men watching, this must be really scary.

evil dead rise (2023) dir. lee cronin.

★★☆

the title card for this movie was amazing? one of the best i've seen in a while. honestly, i don't think i'm that big of a fan of this one. personally, i'm not someone who likes films with excessive gore. i think it takes away from the plot and is a bit distracting if there's a lot. and there is a lot in this one! this is one of those films that you'll absolutely love if you like gore, but if you don't, not so much. i also thought the pacing was a little weird, and the scares disappointed me a bit too. it got a little repetitive at some points as well. but there is a lot of potential here and there's many interesting concepts throughout the movie i wish they explored more. i had heard very positive things about this movie from friends before watching, so i was a little let down, but i can also see why you'd love this if you're into this genre. while i'm a fan of horror i prefer other horror genres over this.

jennifer's body (2009) dir. karyn kusama

★★★

had so much fun watching this! i've been putting off watching this for so long, i don't know why. i'm just about 14 years late to the party but i can now say that i get the hype! while it's not perfect it's fun with an interesting concept, as well as deeper themes when analysing and reading between the lines. i thought this was brilliant, i love it!

spiderman: into the spider-verse (2018) dir. rodney rothman, peter ramsey, bob persichetti

★★★★★

a classic! one of my favourite films of all time. the animation style is just gorgeous, i can't even put words to it. it's so creative, funny and to me this film completely redefines superhero movies. it's just ridiculously good, insane achievement for animation. and it just keeps getting better the more you rewatch it.

230809

back to the future (1985) dir. robert zemeckis

★★★☆

this was actually my first time watching, i never watched this when i was younger for some reason and then i just never got around to seeing it when i got older. i thought it was fun! it’s well structured and the pacing is good, you don’t get bored at any point in the movie. it’s unfortunate that the women have little to no depth, but that’s pretty common when it comes to all classics i feel like, even newer films. overall, it’s a great feel-good movie!

230812

red, white & royal blue (2023) dir. matthew lópez

★★☆

this is cute! i didnt realize this had come out until a few days after the premiere as im not a fan of the book (havent read it), but i decided to watch it since i saw a bunch of people talking about it. i’m not that big of a fan of romcoms so it’s not necessarily my type of movie but i enjoyed it!

230816

ghostbusters: afterlife (2021) dir. jason reitman

★★☆

i saw this originally in theatres when it came out, mainly for finn wolfhard (im incredibly biased towards his films, sorry). im usually sceptical towards rebooting franchises as it just feels like a cashgrab to me, so i wasnt really expecting anything. i will say i’m probably not the target audience. there’s a bunch of references to the previous films for older fans, and the general story (especially towards the end lol??) feels more targeted towards a younger audience, which definitely worked, my younger sibling went to see this with his friends and they all loved it. the younger cast is amazing, especially mckenna grace! learning this is logan kim’s first acting job was crazy. while this couldve been better i’m still looking forwards to see the sequel!

230828-29

heartbreak high (2022) dir. gracie otto, adam murfet, jessie oldfield, neil sharma

★★★★

this isnt a film, but i’ll add it here anyway bc i just loved it so much and i need to talk about it. ive been meaning to watch this since it came out, but i kept putting it off and then i just never did it. finally i had the time to sit down and watch it all and oh my godd im in love! the characters are great, it’s fun and incorporated “gen z humor” without making it cringy or tacky in any way. i had so much fun but God sasha and harper had me so frustrated i had to pause and take a some deep breaths at times. i cant wait for the next season!!

230830

you are so not invited to my bat mitzvah (2023) dir. sammi cohen

★★

this was the first thing that showed up on netflix when i was desperately looking for something to cure my boredom, and it worked. i liked the focus on stacy and lydias friendship, stacys older sister watching It kinda made my day (that movie change my life). middle school drama is wild.

notes

i didnt watch as much as i wouldve liked this month, i hope to watch more now in september but idk if i’ll be able to due to school starting again <//3
