i had a little blog in my drafts saying that not all from the vault sections of taylor swift albums are created equally and i wanted to rank vault sections of taylor's version albums. but that's really obvious (red > speak now > fearless). so since this is an easier way of doing it, i will also be taking it very seriously. listening to every song again and offering some thoughts.
ok, i have to admit a few of these were first listens:
fearless
that's when (feat. keith urban): weaker at first. the chorus is fun?
don't you: it just kinda feels half-baked! lyrics you can tell r written by younger taylor but the music itself is so current it is the teensiest bit jarring imo.
you all over me (feat. maren morris): i don't know how to feel. these are a special kind of love song from early on where it's about how it's over and something else will happen.
bye bye baby: maybe i am just not fearlesspilled. another song i am very eh about.
we were happy: taylor. these are such okay songs.
red
forever winter: ooooh better than i thought! catchy!
run (feat. ed sheeran): eh
relistens:
red
nothing new (feat. phoebe bridgers): FIRST FEMALE FEATURE ON A TAYLOR SWIFT SONG TO GET HER OWN VERSE!!! ooouuuuu we've all been there.
babe: i am fond of babe. i'm by no means a babe anti. it's a cute little diddy.
message in a bottle: this is a very good song. "i knoOOoOOooW that you like me and it's kinda frightening..." i loved requesting this song at sorority parties. there's one beat when
the song goes "VROOOOOM"/"NYOOOOOM" and that was always a magnificent
beat for everyone to mimic.
i bet you think about me (feat. chris stapleton): i love this song so bad. ohhhh my goooodddd this is the Taylor Swift
Easy-Make Instant Classic Formula. self-righteous and all-knowing, yeah,
i bet you think about me. "i'm harder to forget
than i was to leave" <3 i KNOW that's right!!!!!!! the song's
greatness comes from her satisfaction and the insecurities he had about
her which she calls out ("mr. superior thinking" "chasing make-believe
status") bffr about "i grew up on a farm/no it wasn't a mansion/living room dancing/kitchen table bills" tho. c'mon girlie. she gets the lil twang back in her voice for those "and ah bet yew
think about me" it's such a satisfying song. i BET you think about me. the love i have for this song...unmatched.
speak now
electric touch: is this a safe space? i love fall out boy okay. but it ws the day after they released their we didn't start the fire cover and they were on thin fucking ice. it sure does sound like it's from 2007. (i will be listening over and over again. this is a fall out boy taylor swift collab in 2023 i will take it gladly)
when emma falls in love: i'm so sorry my dear. M-M--MMIIID.
i can see you: TAYLOR PUT THE CAMERA DOWN!!!! cool mv execution. the most sing-in-the-car friendly song on the album. a song with enough energy in it that it must be an apology for rewriting the better than revenge lyric. but it's not a very strong song.
castles crumbling (feat. hayley williams): woman getting a verse? good girl taylor. classic taylor fashion, a universal feeling explained from a unique perspective. hayley adds to the song soooo much...agh...the feminism...im crumbling here. this is a really strong song about vulnerability. song that i can be insane about.
foolish one: why are all the speak now vault songs five minutes minimum??? oh this beat is fun yeah i can get used to th- YOU ARE NOT THE EXCEPTION. YOU WILL NEVER LEARN YOUR LESSON.
timeless: this one i believe was written when she was seventeen. this is so speak now, really encapsulates the feeling of the album. this is another song that i don't think has to be five and a half minutes.
