Debunking common transphobic rhetoric

"People need to present in a way that aligns with their pronouns"

In my experience, trans people don't expect people to get their pronouns first-try, especially in the early stages of their transition when they may not present how they want to. However, trans people don't need to look masculine whilst using he/him pronouns, nor androgynous while using they/them or feminine while using she/her because pronouns do not have to equate to gender expression.

Gender expression has virtually nothing to do with gender or pronouns. Behaving feminine doesn't make someone any less of a boy and vice versa. Also, cis males can and DO act feminine, like, literally all the time.

"Why does the LGBTQ community feel the need to flaunt their sexualities and genders and make it their whole personalities?"

How is it annoying to be proud of our identities? You can try to say that it's a trivial part of identity and should be thought of in the same way as heterosexuality/being cis. However, since we haven't achieved equality, how can this be the case? We display pride because we are constantly trampled on by bigots. If you don't like hearing about it, you can literally just do something else no one is forcing you to consume such content.

"If you don't experience dysphoria, you aren't trans. Too many people are trans for attention these days"

Dysphoria is not essential to being trans and I am sorry you've been conditioned to think such a way. Ideas like this have really made finding ones identity very difficult for many young trans people. In fact, this is literally counter to any definition of being transgender outlined by public bodies and specialists, from the American Psychiatric Association to the NHS. However, if you are dedicated to believing this myth, that is fine, just don't impose your views onto trans people who are trying to survive in life. Furthermore, the existence of 'transtrenders' is not a threat to trans people. Someone pretending to be trans or detransitioning has no effect on the validity of another persons transition or identity.

"Neopronouns are a mockery of trans people"

Neopronouns are not a mockery of trans people because how can trans people mock the existence of trans people? Makes literally no sense. Although I am under-informed about neopronouns, my belief is that people use these pronouns when the spectrum of 'she/they/he' and some xenopronouns do not fit the idea of their gender in their heads. Furthermore, these pronouns are often used by neurodivergent people who have strong emotional ties to the pronouns and who often experience gender in ways that neurotypical people cannot comprehend.

"Pronouns always equal gender"

Literally how. Take for example, the case of people using he/they. Within your logic, they would be both on the non-binary spectrum and a male. Which is pretty much not possible. Also, sometimes people use pronouns that are the most convenient and safe for them. If a trans person is not out and still go by their birth-pronouns, they are still trans. Pronouns do not equal gender.

"Neopronouns are chronically online, why would I use them for someone?"

This is just wrong. In fact, one of the first recorded uses of a neopronoun dates back to 1789 where one William H Marshall documented the use of “a” as a pronoun (used previously by John of Trevisa, a 14th century English writer). One of the oldest noted examples of a neopronoun is “thon”. That took me ONE google search. What impact does it have on you to refer to someone using neopronouns? Please tell me one real-life lasting impact of doing so. Will you feel dysphoria, depression, anxiety? No. But they will.

"There are so many more cases nowadays of detransitioners who thought they were trans but were just confused or blinded by social media."

One google search has told me that 'Detransition is more common in the earlier stages of transition, particularly before surgeries. The number of detransitioners is unknown, with estimates generally ranging from less than 1% to as many as 8%.' If you think that the presence of MAXIMUM 8% of a group of people should hinder the growth and happiness of the rest of the group, there's something wrong with you. The existence of these people has nothing to do with the validity of other trans people.
