Here's a Hawaiian dish I've started making quite a bit since discovering it, the Loco Moco!

Ingredients (For 2 Servings):
- 1.5 Cups Uncooked White Rice
- 1 Cup Mushroom Gravy
- 6 Button Mushrooms, Sliced
- 2 Burgers
(Optional Ingredients)
- Furikake Seasoning
- 1/2 an Onion, Sliced or Diced
- 1 Green Onion, Sliced
The ingredients of "mushroom gravy" and "burgers" are vague because these can be made in as intricate or fast a way as needed, and while beef burgers are the typical burger used, if you want to use a veggie burger, or some other type of burger, who am I to stop you? Seasonings also can be altered: when I make my own burgers, I typically only use salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
For this loco moco, I went pretty low-effort: frozen burger patties steamed then fried in butter, and then a powdered McCormick mushroom gravy mix.
Steps:
- Cook the rice. I use a rice cooker, but of course there are other ways to do this. For 2 servings, I use 1.5 cups uncooked rice, to make 3 cups of cooked rice. Once the rice is done, add furikake if you have it.
- While the rice is cooking, cook your burgers in a high-rimmed pan or pot. This is so the burger juices can be used in making the gravy!
- When the burgers are completely cooked, take them out and let them rest on a paper-towel lined plate.
- In the same pan/pot, sautee your mushrooms, and onion if you have it. Keeping these in the pan, make your gravy.
- In a clean pan, fry two eggs, over-easy. (Can do over-hard if you don't like runny yolk, but I will judge you, as the runny yolk adds great depth of flavor!)
- Assemble your loco moco: rice, burger patty, egg, then mushroom gravy (and green onions on top for garnish if you have 'em)!
Funnily enough, this is a favorite of my roommate as well. Which I did not expect when I first made it, as he is not a huge fan of eggs or brown gravy. But after that first time I made it, it's been requested multiple times since! It's so hearty and filling.
