"But it's a scam call, I'll know that as soon as I see it" I already hear you saying, and well, that's just it I thought pretty much the same thing till this call happened. the caller ID picks it up as prison/jail and that's cuz this scam is done by an actual inmate. when you answer the call, an automated message will play and pretty much tells you if you want to receive the call to push 1. DO NOT PUSH 1! I cannot stress this enough! so I clicked 1 right? Well, after it was just silence and then the phone hung up. now I have to tell you the reason I pushed 1 was because I was worried one of my realitives was in jail and where trying to contact me so when silence happened afterwards I knew something was fishy, and sure enough this is a scam I found while looking up why I got a call from prison/jail. if you press 1 this allows the inmate to charge calls to your number. on top of that they can get personal information attached to the account. this scam can also be used to sell information to other scammers which makes your number a target of more scam calls. (this part I'm not as worried about)
since it's late right now what I've done for now is turn my phones mobile data off until i can get to a metro pcs store. (I did try to contact metro pcs customer service before hand to no success as their automation system is more concerned with matters regarding your bill or account changes) likely I'll have to change my number and possibly my debit card number.
