Reagan would not be a Republican today.

I've been thinking about this article for awhile, and one thing I can say with confidence is that Ronald Reagan would probably not be a part of the Republican Party today. While the GOP's current right wing slant can be contributed to Reagan and I'm definitely not defending a lot of the things he did, many of which have caused a lot of our country's current problems, 21st Century Republicans like Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar, Matt Gaetz, Josh Hawley, Greg Abbott, Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz and of course, Donald Trump, would probably not be fans of Reagan's style of conservatism. In fact, many laws Reagan passed in the 1980s wouldn't even get a lick of GOP support.

One of the biggest things current Republicans hate today is gun control, which Reagan actually became a proponent of after he survived an assassination attempt in 1981.

They also wouldn't like that he expanded Medicare, despite Reagan not being a fan of it when he was Governor of California.

They also wouldn't like his stance on immigration. He actually gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants in 1987, something that would never be done today. He also apologized to Japanese Americans for the Internment Camps of World War II, which Michelle Malkin said was right and wanted to bring back for Arabs during the War on Terror. Hell, she even wrote a book in 2004 called "In Defense of Internment". When Reagan left office in 1989, he said in an interview that "Anyone from any corner of the world can come to America and become and American", which definitely does NOT fly with the "blood and soil" policy of the current GOP.

Reagan also adopted a more agressive stance against the Soviet Union and called it the "evil empire", which would not fly with a lot of Republicans now, who support Russia's current regime, although Reagan later changed his stance on the "evil empire" phrase in his later years and was willing to cooperate with Gorbachev when necessary.

In fact, probably the biggest sin Reagan committed was not treating Democrats as a full-on enemy, as opposed to just rivals. Despite Reagan being a conservative Republican, he was willing to work with the Democrats for the betterment of the country, relatively speaking. Many Democrats actually did support him in both 1980 and 1984 and he had friends on both sides of the aisle. Also, Reagan had to work with a Democratic-led Congress for most of his presidency. He disagreed with both former President Jimmy Carter and house speaker Tip O'Neill on a lot of things, but they were still civil with each other and respected one another as fellow Americans and public servants. O'Neill visited Reagan at the hospital after his assassination attempt and prayed together and when O'Neill died in 1994, Reagan gave a eulogy at his funeral. In addition, when the Carter Presidential Library opened in 1986, Reagan spoke at the dedication and Carter gave a heartfelt eulogy at Reagan's funeral in 2004. The idea of political compromise and bipartisanship and respect is unheard of today. The QAnon MAGAtards that make up the current GOP would accuse Reagan of being a RINO or a cuck for even thinking of cooperating with the Democrats.

So Ronald Reagan would definitely not be a Republican in the 21st Century. While that does not excuse a lot of the bad stuff he did during his presidency, at least he knew how to act like a President. He once said that he "didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me". But it now looks like the Republican Party has left him as well...
