My Halloween costume was inspired by a real life American Horror Story—or rather—a perfect storm of corruption and privilege run amok.
This year, I was Elizabeth Holmes, the ex-CEO and founder of Theranos.
If you're unfamiliar with that fraudulent company, the woman herself, or the slow impending process of her current criminal trial, then here are some places to start:
- U.S. v. Elizabeth Holmes, et al.
Elizabeth Holmes and Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani (her COO/now ex-boo thang) are charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud. According to the indictment, the charges stem from allegations that Holmes and Balwani engaged in a multi-million-dollar scheme to defraud investors, and a separate scheme to defraud doctors and patients. Both schemes involved efforts to promote Theranos, a company founded by Holmes and based in Palo Alto, California. Theranos was a private health care and life sciences company with the stated mission to revolutionize medical laboratory testing through allegedly innovative methods for drawing blood, testing blood, and interpreting the resulting patient data. - The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, dir. Alex Gibney
- Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou
- The Dropout: Elizabeth Holmes on Trial by Rebecca Jarvis with ABC News
As for my costume?! Here's a side by side comparison:

NOTE: It did take a while to truly replicate the soulless aspect of the stare, as well as the voice drop.
I'm keeping up with the trial as it proceeds. As of now, I feel like the evidence against her is overwhelming. I'm not so pissed about what happened to the Investors, or at least the big name ones like the Walmart family, but I am HIGHLY pissed for the patients. It sounds like the Prosecution is killin' it, BUT the judge just let go of a juror for playing Sudoku during witness testimony...so they've got two more alternate jurors to go through before they hit the mistrial level. #sigh.

Thank you so much!!! 🖤OMG, YES. Every season can be spooky season, so long as you incorporate enough black clothes and horror movies into your daily routine! 🖤🕯🦇🕸

Well, you've added another person to my list of "Capitalists that need to die in a ditch somewhere."
Great costume by the way. I understand why you chose it
Yup! Some state that she was too deeply embedded in the whole "fake it 'till you make it" ethos, and are blaming this all on the culture of Silicon Valley. I agree that the scene is toxic; however, you can't "fake it 'till you make it" with a device that people will use to make important health decisions.

Thank you so much for your comment! Hopefully she will endure some repercussions for lying about her medical device and releasing highly inaccurate results for use among the American public. The pessimist in me feels like she'll get some sort of "prison" time like Aunt Becky did after Operation Varsity Blues—complete with yoga and spa treatments. Holmes did make the comment to someone that she was "too pretty to go to prison."
