Edgy Kid Lament

▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄

One thing I do really miss about my early teenage years was growing up through so many different edgy phases.

First I was a scene kid back in 2010 and through 2014, I had the poofy hair, I listened to shit like Blood On The Dance Floor, I had the feathers in my hair. All the neon emo shit you could imagine at hot topic. Hell I even hung out with the kids who thought they were werewolves and vampires, hope they’re doing well nowadays lol

Then I moved to emo, which is a strange transition because you usually go from emo to scene but I digress. I got the feathers out of my hair, I stopped teasing it to make it as poofy as possible and I died the ends red and black, I started to wear a lot more black and began to switch my music taste again.

Once 2017 hit, I switched it up again and now I’m more grunge but also have different tastes in music like punk ska and so on.

The thing about subcultures like these, there’s so much more than just the fashion or the music you listen to. It’s a community, a collective, a part of it is a mindset. A part of it is the way you think.

I’ll break it down as easy as I can

Emo: “The world sucks and I hate it”
Goth: “The world sucks but there is beauty in it’s decay”
Punk/Grunge: “The world sucks and I’m going to fight like hell for change”
Ska: “The world sucks but I got a trumpet!”
Scene: “The world sucks but I wont let them keep me down!

I do miss being scene, I love seeing people show more interest in something that made me genuinely happy as a pre-teen and a young teenager. And lordy loo how I absolutely miss the sound and feeling old 2010s EDM and scene songs had. But there's something that has carried on that I don't miss;;

I’ve seen the subculture wars, the amount of hate people can have when somebody new or they don’t feel like are worthy enough to step on their territory comes along. But as a former scene/emo kid who is now just chilling as a grunge guy; we’re all the same.

Flesh and blood

The world does suck and we can all agree on that and respect how we handle it. I don't want to see people punch each other down. I'd rather see people uplift each other and have that mutual respect back.

So if you're just getting into being scene or any kind of edgy subculture; Welcome! Welcome home and I'm glad you found something that makes you feel seen.

Pun entirely intended.
