On September 11, 2001, a series of attacks associated with the extremist group al-Qaeda were unleashed on the United States. 2,750 people died in New York, 184 died at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania. 4 Planes were hijacked, one for each of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the 4th one never reached its intended target because the passengers were able to overtake it. President George W. Bush launched the Global War on Terror in response. The Patriot act was passed and Homeland Security was created in order to deal with the issue domestically. The people who think 9/11 may have been an 'inside job' - BBC News
