Classes were cancelled for the victory celebration. I was participating as a member of the faculty while the students marched in the parade. Although this seems simple enough no amount of scolding will ever teach a teenager to keep their mouth shut so the whole parade ground was full of mischievous chatter. I’d force an apology out of a student in a jiffy if they were going to be sincere about it but all they did was say their empty sorrys as if to mock me for being concerned about such a petty incident. Everyday it seems like the students grow to be a functional part of society as their impertinentence knows no bounds.
As I walked past the students I could barely pick apart individual conversations since there was just that many going on. but even if I were to school the students they would claim they were never talking in the first place. This nasty habit was sure to be something that they learned growing up in this place, and surely the longer I stayed here the more I’d be just like them. But I wasn’t just going to let the schoolchildren beat me down, I had to punish them but I didn’t know how. If I tried to come at them with one of my usual methods it was sure to backfire on me. I had to catch them in the middle of their misconduct so that my actions could not get misinterpreted as the evil doer but instead as the self-respecting Edokko. After doing this the only way to escape this mess would be to go back to Tokyo and rejoin Kiyo.
While in this line of thought the line of students abruptly stopped so I went up ahead to check up what was going on. Apparently our students had started fighting the students from the local normal school but the fight was soon quelled upon recognition of the school hierarchy.
When I got home I tried writing Kiyo a letter but struggled to find things to talk about and soon gave up. Porcupine came to my house not much later to discuss Redshirt and Hanger’s afterschool activities and our plans to sneak up on them. We talked until a student came inviting Porcupine to the entertainment section of the victory celebration. I came with the Kōchi dancing and it was mesmerizing but then a fight began. As teachers it was Porcupine and I’s duty to stop the fight but soon enough we realized it was either hit or get hit so we started swinging. In the end we were the only two left and went home riddled with injuries.
