Dear God, please don't let me die in my hometown.

My small town in South Texas has been home for as long as I can remember, making it one of the few consistent things in my life. I wouldn’t feel comfortable stating its population, though, as it always seems to change. People come and go, some faster than others. Almost as if they’re afraid of collecting the same dust that covers everything behind the public library. The town's younger population holds the same fear, making the fastest getaways of all. Somewhat convinced that if they’re still here at eighteen, they may just never make it out. If the graduates had a choice, they’d skip the celebratory barbecue and just take the shiny new Honda as fast as they could out of the city limits. Others don’t even wait to be handed a diploma, choosing to end their education early and make their escape.
