Eviction

Bare floorboards creak in the
curtainless unfurnished room
an empty shell, hollowness -
almost a representation
of the way he felt inside
Vacant. Lost, in the echoes
of the clinking clanking sound
of ice cubes, against the glug of
tumbling golden liqueur,
steaming breath exudes in
uninsulated temperatures
unforgiving, he sighs in the sombre grey light,
feeling the burn as the syrup glides
down his gullet
radiating ripples of temporary central heating,
intermittent shivers of iced water
trickles down his spine...
bluish knobbly fingers clutch tightly around
the futile security of the glass
in the pending final moments
as it's all he has left...
