Comic Recommendations![ENG]

This is dedicated for all those who love to read comics (outside of Marvel DC and any other currently 'mainstream' form [or yes (?)] ) 2017 it was a year of complete pain, where melancholic depression got the worst of me. The tragic news of my idol Chester Bennington, then Hurricane Maria who destroyed my life, my poetry books, drawings and writings. I was not yet ready to heal from a tragedy so that later another one would come on top of me and the world would sadly come crashing down on me.

I didn't know what to do anymore, I didn't have drugs to distract me, I didn't have the desired company, after motivating myself in college to always get A and B, two horrible Fs took away my complete mood; in short, my life was a total disgust... at least the pandemic didn't exist[plandemic]; at that time the university was both an escape from comfort and my first lodging, a lonely torment.

Eventually browsing Facebook in those days, I came across an ad for a comic book app called Webtoons. I remembered at that moment that I was fascinated by reading comics and this opened the doors for me to a dreamlike psychotic obsession of vivid 'movies' by which to entertain myself for hours.

[The game Hidden City accompanied me a lot these days, I'm a big fan of hidden object search games and with a fantastic story, but, we'll leave this for another blog!]

I downloaded the app and started reading, eventually in my search for more similar apps I came across Tapasand that's where it all started!! Comics with fantastic, dark and psychological horror stories that captivated me to the point of not being able to.

From here comes my list of excellent recommendations to my taste. Many of these I still continue to read or have finished and hold a precious place in my heart:

1. Melvina's Therapy - A. Rasen

One of the first comics I discovered on Tapas and it took me to Webtoons to be able to read it. It is a psychological horror, it encompasses the symbolism and mystery in them. I love series like this, with multiple enigmas and a similar theme as this comic presents it.

Melvina's Therapy is about the multiple psychological therapy sessions inside her office and the effects she influences on others. Was she there to help? That fits your description. The structure, the art, the very story is excellently well constructed. For sure many times I immersed myself in it and I have come to identify with many scenes. Episodes don't necessarily follow a single timeline and theme

2. Witch Creek Road - Garth The Greek/Kenan Halilovic

Witches, blood, hexes, spells, curses... What the hell is going on here?!? Will everything be represented in a dreamlike way? Will what is happening be real? To this day I still don't get to understand what the point is. Maybe that's what it's all about, that it just be whatever you want it to be.

Each episode and character has its own story, it is possible that some are intertwined with others but without a specific timeline. Apparently I have found a new subgenre within what I love! Not everything is what it seems to be.

3. GremoryLand - A. Rasen

Six young people embark on a trip to visit an enigmatic amusement park called GremoryLand, where the exit is only possible by finding it inside the park itself, there is no turning back once you enter; and there is no one to take you back if you changed your mind at the last minute.

Like any other amusement park, this one is full of machines, there is a gift shop... but... there is no one else, apparently the park has its own history and secrets that surround it, are you ready to enter the park to find out and in turn, find the way out to escape from it?

4. Body For Rent - Zephygaru

Would you like to be someone for a day? Or better, have you ever wondered how interesting it would be to change your body and live your life in it? There is a merchant dedicated to these deep desires where customers can rent the body of the person they want and return to the time agreed by contract.

Every action has its consequences, and we have people of all kinds. The first 11 episodes are free, the rest you need Ink to unlock them..

5. Homesick - Mr. Nohman

It is a complicated comic, it has Frankenstein-style themes, it touches on the theme of suicide, depression, self-harming and mental health in a medical environment located in a hospital.

I have felt very emotional about this comic and at times I have cried.

6. MED/MAD -Mr. Nohman

Silent comic, simple. How great it would be to solve multiple dilemmas in your life with just one potion. Dr. Nohman is here at your service to offer you the best pharmaceutical products that will surely give you what you want and solve multiple of your problems. Welcome to a world of health and well-being!

Is that what you want?

The first season every day there is a free episode, the rest you need Ink to unlock them.

7. Elena - Jorge Jaramillo

A graphic novel that covers the themes of love, loneliness and life in old age with a macabre touch. To how many will the thorn of fear of dying alone give us? It's a shockingly emotional novel.

Listen to the songs to immerse yourself more in the reading!

8. Darbi - Sherard Jackson

Blood, Dinosaurs and much more blood with viscera scattered on one side and the other. This is definitely not your 'happy go' Land Before Time. Delve into the wild world of Darbi, bloody adventures, new swear words to add to your vocabulary (maybe!), drugs, had I mentioned blood and guts? Well, yes! Not even the smallest dinos get away!

9. My Dictator Boyfriend - Teo & Guy

Tauligia has a new leader, his name is Immanuel, who hides a secret while leading a nation. Things are not as easy as thought; many have their doubts, the city hides conspiracies about the events under the command of the previous leaders in power.

Love affairs, obsessions, politicking... This comic covers multiple themes and an interesting plot that goes beyond just a comedy that touches on the theme of homosexual romance and LGBTQ + situations without looking forced.

10. DON'T READ - MoiOBRA

Interesting and interactive comic taken in a completely different way, oops! but... I can't reveal much about this one! You will have to find out for yourself and find out what this fantastic comic is about.

The art is spectacular, it carries a dark and striking touch, simple colors and a story that develops over time (and the choices!).

11. Adventures of God - Teo & Corey

Welcome to the misadventures of God (with his ego problem, alcohol and bad decisions), Lucifer and compatriots, who knows what is up there or down there, what will you encounter when leaving the mortal world? Apparently, things are not as to the point as has been rumored for years on Earth are they not?

The more biblical references you know, the funnier this comic becomes.

12. Boo! It's Sex - Danielle Corsetto & Monica Gallagher

A group of young people, fresh from graduating from high school, they moved into a sorority house, where they meet a charismatic ghost who helps and teaches them everything about sex education. I've learned a lot about Sex ED Thanks to this comic. It is varied and teaches in a fun way.

Who imagined that learning about it could become interesting and in a comic book! I love educational series of this kind, it reminds me a lot of Where On Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? and The World of Beakman because of his style in how this comic is narrated.

I really hope that this has helped you, or if at some point you wanted to want to get into new comics but you had no idea where to start

See ya in the next blog!

Update Note: This post was supposed to have music behind like it happens in the Spanish OG Version however I have no idea why it does not work well

I also recommend Suicide Boy on Lenzhen or Mangaowl. It's a slice-of-life comic that constantly moves from light and weight topics, and sometime it is relatable.

Though, I don't really support its artist (Park Gee) considering he's a shotacon, and there were chapters and official arts of Soorim or Hooni (both are minors) in sexual or creepy situations.
