falcon and the winter soldier

this blog will be a collection of episode reviews that i post as bulletins and copy and paste over here the reason for this is well...politics hear me out...

i've kinda of fallen out of following superhero movies but especially marvel movies as disney insist on cramming their films with the woke cults propaganda and while i've heard this show has had it overbearing moments i also hear how it turns around and becomes anti-woke but even more interesting is the different takes on the show from the anti-woke political commentators the most polarizing of which are tim pool and eric july my political compass shows me as a liberty oriented centrist with a right lean the right lean coming from my opposition to the woke cult (although my most recent test showed i drifted a bit further right of center i explained why i think this is in a previous blog post and i fully expect it to move back towards the center line over time) and more so my nolan chart placement (90% for both economic and social freedom) has me perfectly centered and fully in opposition to authority i figured i'd like to watch it for myself besides if it's as based as tim makes it sound i should be watching it anyways you know the whole vote with your wallet thing and do an episodic review for anyone who wants to see my opinions on the show (note this blog is meant to be updated as i view the show)

episode 1

-------------------------------------------------- This will be the only one of these i preface with this. i've been meaning to watch this if you're curious about my reasoning for wanting to watch it and review it i advise you check out my blog post where i will be copy and pasting these reviews as i explain that there and it would be redundant to do so here. https://blog.spacehey.com/entry?id=25033 that out of the way, my reviews here are probably not going to be too detailed since they're general thoughts on the episodes. that by no means means these reviews will be spoiler free so for the best experience of these reviews i would recommend watching the series with me or having already watched it however i understand if you just want to read these to get my general opinion on the show. so my first impressions, to start before i even pressed play i saw something that worries me. as you probably guessed i don't really watch disney+ so i haven't really been keeping up with any shows they are releasing there exclusively as a result i have no idea if the series is ended or still on going. if it is still on going 6 episodes is a low number so any good i find in the show could easily be flipped on me as we go and that would suck. anyways when i started the episode my first complaint was already present and that is the volume it was a really quite episode i had to turn my tv up o 60 to even begin to hear the show which is 40 higher than the tv usually sits at and even u that high i still had to turn captions on cause it was still so hard to hear. the opening scene itself was fine it felt kinda foreshadowy based on what i know of this show already. we see sam holding caps shield and bouncing around the question of weather or not he should take up the mantle of captain america (this will make sense in a bit) we then cut to a fight scene which appears to take place in the middle east? the scene itself was pretty good i had some issues with the way it was choreographed but nothing major just a small logistical error i noticed probably cuz i was looking for things to talk about as i was watching the episode to begin with after the fight scene we see sam having a conversation where we are introduced to who the enemy of the serise is the "flag smashers" he then heads back to america where he gives a speech about captain americas importance and he hands the sheild back to the united states what i'm getting from this and how this is handled is that steve rodgers is in fact dead meaning the role of "captin america" is up for grabs. sam explains his reasoning for not taking up the mantle as being it didn't feel right (this part is not foreshadowy at all ... or maybe it is as i said before i have no idea if this show is still on going or not) cut to bucky having a nightmare which he awakes from and is in a therapists office where we have a plot dump in the most antagonizing way i guess bucky is dealing with post war ptsd after years of being caps sidekick after this bucky meets yori (thats how the subs spell it i feel like it's supposed to be yuri but you can really hear an o sound when other characters say his name so i could be wrong) who i believe will become a kind of mentor character for bucky but not in the way mr.myogi is to danial in the karate kid all though thats what is implied through this episode they even throw in the dead son thing from myogis character. nah i think it'll be in a more iroh type way that he mentors bucky. ok here i'd like to puase and note there is a pacing issue with this episode the fight scenes in this episode (up to this point would be the beginning scene and buckys nightmare) are paced well but the parts where the plot is being dumped or the characters are talking the none fight scenes lets put it that way those scenes are extremely slow and i wouldn't blame anyone for tuning out because of that. i mean they drone on and on with nothing of real value happening for minutes at a time such as a scene i completely skipped over where bucky is set up for a date with a girl it was just a plot tool to get him to go back to yori but it took forever to get to the part where she reminds bucky about his rant from the previous scene about his dead son which is the catalyst that he ditches his date to go see yori for. ok with that out of the way and trust me that is my biggest criticism of this episode which all things considered isent a bad issue to have i mean the joker had pacing issues and that movie is a master piece. ok we're back to sam now and his wife is struggling with the fishing business he does on his time off after he tries and fails to help her out with her money issues she divorces him. which can i note how selfish it is to divorce someone over money issues from their dream job like that? i mean this chick gives off the vibes that chick from gods not dead that broke up with the main character of that movie gives off (yes i did watch that movie yes i enjoyed it at the time no i would not go back to it no and no i don't think i would enjoy it now my beliefs now are very different from what they where back then) after this we see the flag smashers looting a bank they show a strikingly similarity to a real life group of people who have terrorized americans last year and continue to do so today (i think it was a flag smasher in buckys nightmare the dude said hail hydr@ though so my guess is these guys are supposed to be a combination of both the auth right and far left which is rather interesting when you think about it) the leader shows off his abilities bucky shows up and the flag smashers beat him down like a mob the scene bears striking similarities to one of the earliest videos of the riots last year to come out where a sword wielding shop owner was brutally beaten and killed by the mob after this we see sam turn on the news where the president announces that there is a new captain america this of course is bucky which totally threw me cuz i was actually expecting this show to be sam and steve so a pleasant surprise for me and thats where the episode ends. (lol i said i wasn't going to go too much into detail and then painted out basically a play by play)

so how would i rate this episode?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ i think this episode had it's flaws the biggest of which was the paceing but all things considered i did like this episode when it wasn't droning on and it is only the first episode so i think i can forgive it for being a little slow to catch me up before throwing me straight into the action the political discourse which being a captain america show is important i think was rather interesting in this episode it's nothing we don't know already but it really sets up who we are supposed to side with right from the get go i feel like we're seeing things through the view point of army veterans which in a way we are so i gotta say they did a good job on this one on a scale of 1 to 10 i rate this episode a 7

Episode 2

wow ok so this episode is the one where i can see why people really don't give this show a chance. in a way the show kinda fails the 3 episode test. we're onto episode 2 and this show gives us the worst it has to offer. however if this is the worst it's got to offer there may be hope yet. i mean don't get me wrong theres a lot to dislike in this episode but i think theres some good in it too. ok lets start by correcting a mistake actually multiple mistakes from my previous review no buck is not the new cap the new cap is john walker who we actually did see in the last episode outside of the suit. he's the one who introduced us to the flag smashers. anyways this episode starts out with his first propaganda apperance as cap but not only that there's an interview with him a great device that is used to show bucky not feeling to great about the new cap. bucky and falcon set out to do a mission together before which bucky tries to understand why sam gave up the shield as it turns out rodgers entrusted the shield to him. instead of answers sam just briefs bucky on the mission and we cut to a fight scene. again we see well known tactics of a similar group here in america being used by the flag smashers theres a lot of comedic points in this fight and it's an overall good fight scene except one point where again perception would say the dude is dead but they don't die this spot is actually used to put him into a compromising situation. i feel if this scene was choreographed a little better they could have gotten him into that compromising situation without making it look like he was pulled under the wheels of the truck they're fighting on. bucky and falcon are struggling in this fight walker wearing the captin america suit comes to the rescue except well he also gets his @ss thoroughly handed to him our heroes are knocked off the truck and lose the flag smashers. we learn that they used the super serum on 8 of their people. bucky and sam both express to walker they arent ready to accept him as the new captin america bucky far less willing to accept it obviously than sam is and here is where things get a little woke every terrible scene you may have heard about in this show happen in rapid succession here. the first of these scenes isn't too bad a kid calls sam black griffin and he states that it's just griffin his race has nothing to do with his identity. like i said that one isen't too bad i actually like the message that being don't make things about race that arent. the next scene bucky and sam are talking to an ex captin america a black man might i add not that it entirely means anything in fact i'm pretty sure it's a call back to something that actually happened in the captain america comics i mean other than the one this show is based on. but i don't know too much about that one all you gotta know is this guy had the super serum and he was locked up for 30 years (i believe the justification in the comic was that he went crazy after taking the super serum and ended up killing innocent civilians like i said though i haven't read that comic and my lore is on the level of super casual fan that came acsross a video that explained the various other captains you may have not known about one day) and he's pissed. sam is upset that he didn't know about this guy it's not long after letting us know that though that the next and final scene people point to when they call this show woke garbage and shut it down comes up and again it's not as bad as they make it sound. this is the scene where bucky and sam are confronted by police askes for sams i.d. and honestly are kinda out of line till bucky makes it known that he's black falcon after which the officer apologizes now all of that sounds bad but you don't know what happens after turns out theres a warrant for buckys arrest. that's right the white guy not the black guy is arrested in this scene. his charge is for missing his mandatory therapy session cap bails bucky out and sanctions that bucky no longer has to do the therapy sessions this by no means changes buckys opinion of the new cap and he still has a problem with sam bucky is asked to do a therapy session before he is allowed to leave sam is dragged along and here we see the 2 hash out their issues with each other bucky still trying to understand why sam wont take up the mantel of cap after hashing it out for a bit they run into walker where they express they're still having a hard time accepting him as cap and the episode goes on to a cliff hanger that i'm sure i'll end up recapping in the next review and has almost nothing to do with this specific episode there was also a scene stuck in here showing the villain side honestly it just shows how cult like the flag smashers are their motto is "1 world 1 people" which is in reference to their cuase of removing all borders

how would i rate this episode?

i'm probably going to spill alot of my problems here XD this episode was paced better and it's action scenes while where terribly choreographed wern't all that bad theres alot of conflict in this episode and i don't just mean plot conflict i mean between the characters generally you see a team break down like this in the middle not the end of a show. this episode was set up but it maybe doesn't make that obvious enough cuz people talk about it as though it's the journey and not the lead up to the journey which is why you get alot of people speaking ill of it honestly if you really think this show sounds like it's too woke maybe watch this episode with a little less bias cuz the scenes in this episode that everyone loves to point to really aren't that bad we've seen worse from these superhero shows *coughbirdsofpreycough* so when it comes to politics in this episode i think it may have actually been a little weak sending all sorts of mixed signals to the viewer we've kinda lost sight of who the bad guy is in fact bucky almost seems like the villain in a lot of these scenes and cap himself well he's kinda an attention wh0re in this episode so my overall rating for this episode as a whole is 4/10 a low score yes but it is watchable again i just think this episode does things right in theory but it just has poor execution and honestly if my prediction of this being the worst episode is true than we should be in for quite a good show.

episode 3

a huge 180 from last episode this episode was really good on the action side of things it was almost like a 007 film i.e. most of the fighting was shoot outs which worked for the fight choreography well as this is the first episode where there wasn't an anomaly of someone who should have died surviving i would like to remind this is the 3rd episode we're 50% through so it's still set up the lines remain blurred between good and bad on this episode but it works in favor this time one can really relate to flag smashers here anyway this in this episode in search for where the super soldier serum is coming from bucky and sam break hydr@ soldier and baron zemo out of jail as it turns out zemo had previously tried to end the super soldier program so it makes sense that he'd have a good lead their search brings them to a different country where sam goes by the allias "smiling tiger" this is where they learn where the super soldier serum is being made and supplied to the flag smashers but not without sams real name being found out which would be a problem if it wasn't for this sharon chick showing up and saving their a$$es i have no idea who she is i think she might be from s.h.i.e.l.d which at this point in the MCU we already know is an evil organization and they where replaced by the avengers i'm not sure if this is the case or not i haven't payed too close attention to the MCU so she could have showed up in something more recent either way she helps sam and bucky get to the location where the super serum is being made and distributed the scientist there reveals he was originally hired by hydr@ however after hydr@ was stopped he was recruited by the CIA to continue his work his super serum is apparently different to that of which cap took the gov dropped the program the flag smashers picked up this guy and gave him the funding to continue his work for obvious reasons (more parallels to the group the flag smashers is a rep of) they are of course attacked and heres where lines get even more blurred we actually see zemo wearing a flag smashers mask in this scene bucky and sam have no idea of course also after this scene sharon gets in a car with someone and states "we have a huge problem" finally cut to walker he's almost a good parallel to another group of people one opposed to the group that the flag smashers is based on but also has some rather shaky beliefs specifically blind belief in our police so on caps side we see he's rather aggressive in his search for intel almost mirroring what the type of actions the police are accused of which is probably the only woke thing in this episode i mean other than sam and bucky working with a n@zi but of course thats questionable since that n@zi also appears to be part of the flag smashers like i said we have blurred lines either way cap finds out that bucky and sam broke zemo out of jail and i gotta say he's rather controlled given the emotions he displays here but he makes it clear in this scene that he is certainly not on sam and buckys side carrying over the conflict started last episode between this group ok now on the flag smashers side i had to do them separately this time to keep things straight for you so we see the chick from the last episode living in a refugee camp and caring for the people here it is also here where we see a connection between the flag smashers and the hand if you're not aware of who the hand is i advise you to check out the iron fist where the hand is explained once you know who they are you'll certainly be on the look out for connections with them between other villains in the MCU we also see that the flag smashers are aware of bucky and sam working with zemo and they just like cap have a problem with it though probably more of a problem since he's actually revealing secrets the only other scene with the flag smashers to talk about is a scene where they bomb a building this chicks subordinate has a problem with that protesting that "there where people in that building" to which she replies "violence is the only language they understand" and finally the last scene of this episode is a cliff hanger sam and zemo go into a bank bucky excuses himself to take a walk where he picks up what appears to be bombs he shouts out "you dropped something" and a rokandan appears asking he hands over zemo (if it's not clear everyone hates this dude as they should)

how would i rate this episode?

theres alot that happened in this episode i don't think it'd be fair to rate this episode on it's politics since sam and bucky have made a temp alliance with zemo but i will say that despite the lines being blurred we're kinda getting back on track now which is good cuz we only have 3 episodes left for things to return to being on track the fights where great though a little hard to keep track but honestly i'd say this episode so far has the best fight scenes we get character development some of which i didn't go over in the review portion but i'm sure will come up sooner rather than later i don't think a second of screen time was a waste in this episode you can actually relate to every character on screen each for different reasons it's actually kind of insane how well they made even the most evil actions in this episode look justified so i'm gonna rate this an 8.5/10 i think the only thing dragging the score down a bit is the lingering bitter taste from the last episode but i fully expect sam and bucky to end up not just facing flag smashers at this point but also cap and hydr@ supporters they've pretty much become public enemy #1 and they're supposed to be the good guys which we know but all everyone else sees is a couple of guys who broke a n@zi out of jail they aren't even questioning if theres a good reason and sam and bucky themselves clearly don't trust zemo so yeah episode 4 and 5 could be quite spicy this is the kinda of set up that i think most wanted from the last episode it's clear set up the powder keg has been set and we know it this time

episode 4

we're a little over halfway and holy cr@p this may be my favorite episode so far i highly recommend watching this one for yourself theres a lot in this episode so my rundown portion of this review is going to be more of an outline than a play by play as other rundowns have kinda become first off i finally cuaght the name of the flag smasher girl we've been following on the bad guys side her name is karli it was mentioned before but this is the first time i heard it and have it stick the subtitles being on helped with that that being said we start out this episode with maybe the worst way to tell us that the reason the rokandans want z3m0 is because they where the ones holding him captive in the first place (seriously it was like 5 minutes of gibberish that probably means something to those that watched black panther but i didn't so i was just lost trying to figure out why z3m0 was crying as this chick is telling him "you're free") bucky makes a deal with the rokandan to have zemo under his watch for more 8 hours it is here where he states z3m0 is just a means to an end so our heroes and z3m0 head to a flag smasher refugee camp trying to find karli who's there to hold a funeral z3m0 holds bucky and sam hostage with his knowledge we do see bucky show he doesn't like z3m0 around this point in case you're curious about who the good guys are after last episode on the bad guys side here we actually see that the flagsmashers use the tactic of positioning themselves against n@z1s to make themselves up the good guys kind of like the group they are based on does cap meets up with bucky and sam and he's p1ss3d they are on the same page about z3m0 now as he is holding knowledge from the group that at this point he's only drip feeding them (i'm not a big fan of how he get's his intel either btw) z3m0 leads the group to the funeral cap cuffs him after the funeral is over sam has a one on one conversation with karli and just as he starts making progress of showing her why her ideology is wrong cap rows impatient and burst in which causes karli to run off during the following chaos z3m0 managed to get himself free we see him sh00t at karli she takes cover unfortunately for her though the table she took cover behind had the serum on it the vials spill all over the place z3m0 begins smashing them till cap hits z3m0 with his shield knocking him out karli get's away the group regather they know they need z3m0 to help locate karli but time is up the rokandan from before shows up and of course it's cap who fights and let me just state for the record watching john walker have his a$$ handed to him here was awesome of course it wasn't just cap the whole group is beaten but not without z3m0 escaping amidst the chaos so the fight was ultimately pointless walker is stunned by the fact that someone who hasn't taken the serum could beat him karli calls sams sister trying to get another 1 on 1 with him to get this she threatens her and her family (yet again showing parallels with the group the flagsmashers is based on) despite the fact sam was asked to come alone bucky insists on coming with him sam and karli chat for a bit and then sam is alerted that cap is in the area a huge fight breaks out (and i'd like to n ote how fast karli ons her flagsmasher gear in this scene then again i guess being part of such a group you'd get alot of practice oning your gear at a moments notice) here during this fight karli k!lls lamer caps friend whos been present with him in almost every scene up to this point she looks conflicted and upset about what she's done but still runs off walker man he's brutal in this scene after he realizes lamer is d3ad he's in a blind rage he chases down the dude that was talking to karli earlier (so he is a flagsmasher but he's not wearing the gear here) and just totally brutally k!lls this guy who's not even fighting back out in front of a large crowed staining both the shield and caps legacy and thats been the theme with walker up to this point anyway the moment cap leaves his raged state and realizes what he just did the show ends and we actually get a different ending theme a more somber sadder one that matches the tone the episode ended off with

how would i rate this episode?

ok so like i said before this is my favorite episode so far the fights well choreographed the politics on point the plot easy enough to follow i also really love the development we see john walker go through in this episode through walker we are learning what kind of weight carrying on captin americas legacy is and why the right person needs to be chosen to carry it however i still have gripes with this episode specifically the pacing at the beginning and the fact that this episode easily could have been broken down into smaller more consumable episodes of course if they did that the show would be longer anyways this episode gets a 9/10 from me

episode 5

we're in the home stretch i think this is the episode pool was talking about in his video on this show it opens up right away with john walker running away from the scene of the crime struggling with his thoughts sam and bucky chase him down and fight to remove the shield from walker by the end of the fight everyone is on the ground bucky is the first to get up he picks up the shield and drops it next to sam we then see john removed from his duties as captin america the shield remains in sams position we this episode is focused on one main plot point and that is sam making his decision but of course theres a few things that happen out side of that to both set up the finale and to resolve previous plot points bucky goes after z3m0 he finds him with little issue z3m0 informs bucky that kari is now radicalized which was shown in a previous scene bucky aims a gun at z3m0 only to fire a blank and turn him over to the rokandans don't think we're done with them though at the end f this scene bucky asks them for a favor what that is we'll have to find out in the next episode anyways the flagsmashers are looking to k!ll john walker theres also some flagsmashers attacking a government building where a vote is going on ok now onto sam so sam goes off to visit the supersoldier from episodes ago the guy that the u.s. put in jail he gets his story this guy is not in favor of sam taking up the mantle after the discussion sam goes home where he helps his family repair the boat they get help from bucky sam displays a real bootstraps attitude in this scene eventually they decide not to sell the boat sam and bucky then have a conversation while parlaying the shield back and forth off a tree sam ultimately decides to take up the mantle of cap we see a training montage and the episode ends with sam being alerted to the flagsmashers being in new york he's more than egar to head out after them

how would i rate this episode?

this was a really good episode as you can probably tell by the fact very little happens it does move a little slow but not without good reason this episode is spot on with the politics and the script is well written on this one too theres a lot of great qoutes in this episode the 1 fight scene we had was really good too so my rating 10/10 it's good set up for the finale we get alot of lose ends tied up and this episode was really enjoyable only possible issue i could think with this episode is it's focus on sam making a decision makes it feel kinda soapy but thats not a huge issue theres tons of shows and movies that benifit by taking soap elements in a great example would be the original starwars films

episode 6 (final episode)

ok here it is the final episode and as you could probably guess from my last one theres not a lot to go over in the rundown since most of the episode is simply fighting walker has made his own shield and joins sam and bucky in the fight he displays he now understands what captain america means the guy who attacked the gov building in the last episode is revealed to be the guy that actually repaired the shield (and falcons wings) speaking of falcon the spotlight really is on him in this episode as he's no longer the black falcon but captain america i'm not sure if he took the serum but his fighting style is kind of a combination of shield play and using his wings he gets into a 1 sided fight with kari and by 1 sided i mean he's not fighting at all just defending himself to prove his point eventually kari picks up her gun after knocking the shield away but before she shoots she's shot by her factions leader who's been helping our heroes this whole time cap brings he to the paramedics where he lectors politicians about how they use their power walker is given a black version of the captain america suit and told he's now a government agent which is just one of the many things that ties up loose ends after the fight honestly this review is a giant over simplification if you want to know everything that happens in this episode i highly recommend watching it yourself in fact i recommended watching it yourself anyways it's a really good episode

how would i rate this episode?

as i've stated multiple times in my rundown this was a really good episode there was some fight choreography missteps however they where extremely minor and with the majority of the episode being fight scenes well it's almost kinda expected the politics is great in this episode cap isn't biased to any side as noted in his lecture to the gov official story wise this is a great episode as well we see john walkers character progress brilliantly and lose ends tied up perfectly and yet theres still plenty of room to expand in later captain america releases i'd give this episode a 9/10 and despite the fact i'm singing this episodes praises i still think the last episode was the best episode though i could see maybe lumping the 2 together as this episode is really just wrapping up where we left off

how would i rate this serise?

is it odd that i think both eric july and tim pool are correct? eric julys concern is cap is being tokanized which is where i think he's wrong cuz falcon as cap is very diffrent from steve rodgers as cap but he claims it's tokanization cuz falcon doesn't stay cap in the future which is a concern i get in fact marvel is already drawing up new and already failed versions of captain america which we may see in the future but i don't think falcon is a tokanized captain america even if he does drop the title later on in this specific show he took on the title and it ends under the assumption that he is now captian america we may even get a movie as such in fact one was hinted at now onto pools view pool is more correct than july in his view however it's not just blind rage at the flagsmashers and in fact the new cap actually agrees with some of the flagsmashers views what he doesn't agree with is their method which is why he fights them which is far more commendable than what pool claimed although i can't say the new cap is as based as pool made him sound XD i do like falcon as cap now onto my own thoughts not rooted in the politics but rather in the execution of the story i liked the show but there was a rough patch early on i heavily criticized that episode where it seems like things are taking a turn for the worst but i knew just based on the 2 reviews i was going off of it might be worth it to trudge through that patch as i stated in that review it was set up i also think the show had a pacing issue and the fight choreography is kinda on and off bad especially in the early episodes it defiantly needed more work with that being said mst of the issues are in the early episodes where set up is taking place you could probably watch the last 3 episodes and have a way better experience except that you'd be kinda lost XD all in all it's enjoyable if you can make it past it's flaws therefor i give this series a 7/10 it's defiantly worth watching if you can make it through it's slow start
