Ethereal Wave - A personal favorite subgenre

Ethereal wave is a genre that absolutely encapsulates me. Most people when they think ethereal wave usually bands like Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil come to mind. Personally, I’ve always liked atmosphere over hooks and elements of stuff like darkwave, gothic rock, and dream pop in my ethereal wave music. I’m straying away from foundational/classic 4AD-era interpretations and steering more into melancholic territory in this post. I hope a fan of this sort of music finds something new! 

There’s something about some good female soprano vocals, dense reverb, and a lush production that really puts me in the music. Between listening to harsh noise EP’s these are the sorts of things I like to put on as sort of a palate cleanser, it’s very soothing and dreamy music so its perfect for resetting after blasting electronic feedback in my ears lol.

My current favorite song is Pale - Aenima. Best album in my opinion is Oleander.
