First post in a while, kinda nervous...
ANYWAYS! I wanted to talk about my FAVOuRITE gothic author- Angela Carter. Famous for writing radical retells of fairy tales, she used gothic themes of the taboo, duality, and more to introduce her second wave feminism to these tales.
My favourite feature of hers is through the taboo use of female desire, and how that causes traditionally passive females to become more active characters, ones who change their situations to benefit their own situations. In my opinion, her most interesting rework of a Charles Perrault/Brothers Grimm tale being (one) of her 'Little Red Riding Hood' retellings- 'The Company of Wolves.' For me, the most fascinating part of Carter's story is her change to the ending. For those who haven't read 'The Company of Wolves', I will summarise; after discovering the wolf in the Grandma's place, she does not get eaten. Instead, she strips both herself and the wolf, before Carter implies her and the wolf had sex. The story then ends on with the line; 'See! Sweet and sounds she sleeps in Granny's bed, between the paws of the tender wolf.' This change in the ending is representative of carters second-wave femanism thoughts; female desire should be more talked about. In utalising this as a plot device which she uses to resolve conflict, she is undermining the taboo surrounding such a thing. I'd continue, but honestly I'm shocked if you've made it to the end of this... however, I hope you have enjoyed reading this! And that my string of thoughts has made some sort of sense.
