for the past week or so, my friend has brought up buying an expensive phone model purely because its pink. when i told her that that was unnecessary, her reasoning was "my phone doesnt get software updates anymore anyway, may aswell"
wdym "may aswell", its an expensive phone what o_0
anyway, that got me thinking... she isnt the only one doing this, lots of influencers nowadays buy the newest iphone model before properly using their old phone, lots of influencers post insanely expensive hauls of things they probably need to buy a new shelf for, all while trying to seem "relatable" and likeable to the average person. so many normal people overconsume too these days that youre almost pressured to do the same and not enough ppl are talking about it. like none of this is normal, you cant just buy a phone because its pink. if your favorite color changes in a year, are you gonna buy another phone because its blue? and the year after that too?
not even mentioning the labor conditions people have to be put through to keep up with the insane demand for pretty much everything, this is not helping the literal hole in our ozone layer. we need to stop normalizing this behavior and stop ignoring the REDUCE in reduce, reuse, recycle.
ig thats just what i think tho, thoughts and debates r welcome in the comments if you have anything to add

bought a mp3 player to replace spotify. it saves subscription money in the long run. oog i love my mp3 player.
i've used my mp3 player to the pint where paying for a subscription is like "are you dumb?"

i think there's also a problem that people can't use their money properly, chicks buy the latest iphone because it's "the best" while it's actually really ass outside of apple ecosystem. people buy the airpods knowing they'll die in a year or 2 instead of buying actually good headphones that will last to your grand kids. people buy newest car cuz it has apple carplay despite it having fatal issues.
on the other hand...
i really like owning stuff that is kinda useless but it brings me joy(stuff like plushies, dvd/blurays... etc.). tho i am really concerned that my mood is owned by big companies...
i completely agree! part of that may be caused by sponsored influencers promoting/popularizing specific products over others and people assuming that popular=good (e.g. apple products) when you can invest in better quality for a better price, just without that specific brand name on your product
