i think about a lot of different random things all the time, but one I think about frequently is marketing and advertising. this doesn't really sound any fun, but once you get into it, there's some shit to it. ive started noticing these patterns everywhere. right now, everyone feels like the world is complete shit, so youre going to see companies trying to use nostalgia as leverage. chick fil a has already done it. or a company will go on social media to try and act like, you know, regular people to garner your trust. these are companies, lets not forget their only goal is to profit off of you. so no, theyre not funny or nothing, they just want you to buy shit. a multibillion dollar company doesnt give two flying fucks about who you are or your feelings. one of the things that really pisses me off was the chilis' skillet queso incident. during late october or early november, in an official report, chilis stated that the skillet queso didn't get enough sales so they took it away. now this bullshit is so soooo easy to see through. i dont know any other reason WHY someone would go to chilis. its INTENTIONAL. they took it away, it gave them a lot of attention and spotlight. suddenly, chilis was back to a topic of conversation. its such fucking bullshit, I absolutely love chilis, but my god. they legit manipulated us into giving them more money. sure, they may have lost some revenues, but they probably made it back 10x with their big deal of bringing it back.
a shit ton of this ties into overconsumerism which I honestly believe is higher than ever. starbucks cups, one use makeup products, themed products (movies, tv series, games, etc...) TINY THINGS, these are all fast trend products. this shit REALLYYY pisses me off. its not really just the fact that buying shit you dont need makes a lot of clutter and hoarding, its really about what it does to your mind and the world. this shit engineers you to just want more and more because they make everything cheaply and quickly so they can pump out more and more slop for people to buy every week. constantly, I have to remind myself "I dont need this, I just want the dopamine of it" one phrase that really bothers me in videos for advertising things is the phrase; "run, don't walk to get (this slop thing you'll throw away)" i mean, i feel like this is just the most obvious form of consumerism because no trend is that important you need to "run" to go get something, they want you to buy their cheap ass shit because its trendy.Β once you begin to understand the consequences it has on the world especially, you start to realize how these rich ass companies manipulate you to keep spending money and being dependent on them. these trend products use materials that cant go back into the earth. because most of these are just temporary pleasures, they WILL end up in the landfill one way or another. you cant eat money, guys. this is how late stage capitalism will keep you poor and wanting, its fucking awful.
though, I do believe in the more recent bit, more people have started realizing the outcomes of consumerism with trend like "landfill core" and other adjacent things, but I know too many people around me that go to target every week to get a new sweater, hoodie, cup, or anything else they'll probably only use once. its just not enough for one small group to realize what this shit is doing to the world. for fucks sake, we have a fucking future trillionaire in the USA and we STILL dont have free healthcare, efficient public transportation routes, housing for the homeless, etc...
isn't living in the US so fun?

(mini but not so mini tangent; in one of my classes, we were discussing about how people in poverty shouldn't get assistance to get out of it, just work hard and get a job. now the funny thing was, when I asked the people in that class if any of them had ever had found a job and gotten hired (we live in a nice area btw, consider those factors) maybe 4 of them raised their hand, and 2-3 of them were in agreeance that people in poverty need govt assistance to get out of it. the irony of living in a nice area with people debating on topics like that is just so fucking laughable. none of these people even begin to consider that someone in poverty probably doesn't a nice outfit to interview in, a good method of transportation, a phone, a credit card (i could go on another tangent about this), a place to clean up, etc... and these kids have a house, their parents have connections, they have a car or have a dependable ride, they have a place to sleep, they have a place to clean up at, they have a phone, they have wifi, they have a computer, they have a card, literally everything. if you know anything about the job market rn, its hard enough to get a job anyway. imagine being in poverty while trying to do that shit, its almost impossible, not even mentioning the toll poverty takes on someone's mental and physical health. a millionaire willingly went into poverty to see if he could regain everything he built in a year or like 6 months. he stopped it early because of how harsh it was living like that. imagine-fucking-that, who could've guessed? but sure, keep debating on literal peoples lives while you stay comfortable in ignorance.
