Shootings and the Paralysis of the Political Class

I'm going to try to keep this blog post brief.

Today, yet another shooting made headlines as a gunman dressed in all black clothing injured more than 8 people and killed 2. The gunman entered Brown University and shot people taking final exams.

Citing Open Secrets, we can derive some material understanding of why the Gun Lobby in America gets to continue on in spite of horrific events like this.

In 2025 the Gun Lobby reportedly paid out over 10 million dollars via lobbyists in attempts to keep gun regulation at bay. The previous year this same lobby paid out over 14 million dollars. Year by year the gun lobby, for over the past 25 years, has continued to pay out obscene amounts to politically influence people in positions of power.

Citing Politico we can see how the gun lobby impacted the 2016 election, Trump's first term. In that election cycle over 5 million dollars was paid to Republican candidates. 100k paid to Democrats.

Referring back to Open Secrets, you can see more reports on election cycle donations from the Gun Lobby. Millions upon millions of dollars donated to stave off regulations.

A 2025 report shows that the firearm industry had over 90 Billion in total economic impact, with a further breakdown available: here.

It's safe to say that the noted paralysis by American politicians is a byproduct not of constitutionalism, as the Supreme Court has thrown that out in spirit, but instead is a proxy action on behalf of the capitalist Gun Lobby and its many corporate bodies. It is protection of a 90 billion dollar industry. It is protection of an average ANNUAL 14 million dollars in political contributions.

It is protection of the bottom line for bureaucrats paid in blood money. And they will gladly see you dead for a few dollars more.

Saying this as someone who has had to witness this event be reported on the news in the middle of a whimsical airing of a Rankin-Bass Christmas film and has had a lingering fear of ending up in a shooting one day, I'm tired. I'm tired of how guns and the gun industry are prioritized over human lives, let alone lives that haven't been able to properly live. Money should never be the reason why stuff like this still happens.

Big support your way.

I know the feeling. It's become so commonplace that crowded areas just invoke the thoughts of "What if it happened here today? Am I safe? Where are the exits?"

We all deserve better than what is being provided. We deserve better governance, we deserve to not be victims of capital, and we deserve to live without the constant fear and reminder of such events.

As of November 30th there have been a total on 398 mass shootings in United States alone. More than the number of days in a year. It's undeniably disturbing.

But what is more disturbing, as an outsider looking in, is how the state is continuously prioritising profit over the lives of it citizens amd how a horrifyingly large portion of people are in favor of it.
Why? It's beyond me.

Mind you, this is the SEVENTH (7th) year in a row in which the number of mass shootings in the U.S. has outnumbered the days in the year.
One would think that this, along with the prevailing fact that guns are the number one killers of children, would be more than enough to prompt serious action.
