“well black metal is supposed to be hateful!!” nazi.

one of the most common defenses for nsbm is thst “black metal is meant to be hateful” no shit sherlock, but it’s hateful to the human race not only to certain humans, it’s a space for people to make nihilistic and loathsome music about all of humanity not this bullshit narrative that nazism is inherently tied to black metal.

“look at its roots!!” the roots of black metal came from a bunch of lunatics murdering eachother, animals, and making some of the worst music in the genre, still using mayhem as a reference for modern black metal is hilarious. yes mayhem based their music in hatred but guess what they were? hateful ass nazis who believed evwrything in their music to an extreme, with zero nuance whatsoever, you don’t really think that evwry artist needs to live by their work right..? you don’t think we need to have death metal bands having sex with dead bodies because they sing about it, so why do you think black metal artists need to hate everyone because they sing about it?

“it’s meant to be hateful” yes but not in your understanding of it. black metal is built on the nihilism for the world not just a few minorities. black metal is a place meant to accept all, a place for those who love the music to make the music, support each other, bands, and help the scene prosper, not only for stupid white superemacist loser. this excuse is dripping with idioacracy, and showcases the nazism of whoever’s saying it.

“seperating art from the artist” yeah, obviously view art seperatley from the creators, if we didn’t do this no one would enjoy burzum. it’s needed to enjoy black metal, if you didn’t do it you couldn’t enjoy some of the best musicians because they’re shitty people. now yes seperating art from the artist can be a very slippery slope into actively support nazis, BUT as long as you recognize the people and music are separate and only enjoy something as an art form rhen it’s a completely fine excuse to use. it can also lead into bent very hateful by only applying this excuse to nazis, it gos for evwryone. all music is art and should be viewed without their creators as a part of the art.

“if you listen to nsbm you’re a nazi” not quite. i 100% understand and partially agree with this, but it’s simply not true. like i just said, you can seperate art from the artist but it does lead down a path into nazism if you aren’t careful, just another reason as to why nuance is so extremely important when discussing metal because if it’s not present you get situations like this or situations that form nazis.

OVERALL. you aren’t a shitty person for listening to nsbm, you are for defending or supporting it.
