Hey! Im Abewddy, a graphic designer, youtuber, blah blah blah all those things but no job ahem. I love to write on AI, its effects, etc and also just problems in general that are disguised as nice and innocent. Now your opinion may vary, AI is a tool - its meant to help us, that's completely correct and your right - it should be helping us, but its also illegally using our work and using the easiest cost efficient serverside pollution of water and in this case i'm about to talk about!
Xai - Illegally making a entire AI center in memphis, breaking the clean air act rather than using water, using gas, electricity, etc. Creating a powerplant, no permit, no files. Created overnight. Creating a supercomputer with billions of dollars to power Grok AI. With 34 turbines, polluting the city and forgetting about the millions of people living in Memphis.
“You know how when you light your stove and that gas seeps, that’s what it smells like’
- Alexis Humphreys, Memphis Resident
Memphis Residents have an increased rate of COPD, asthma, bronchititis, etc. Memphis is now the highest ranking air polluted city in America. Emitting 1,000 to 2,000 tons of NOx (Nitrogen Oxides). Nitrogen Oxides, fromaldehydes, and fine particulate matter. Combining these with other pollutants already in the air creates ground ozones which worsens asthma, bronchititis and COPD. Fromaldehydes create cancer and particulate matter is so fine it passes through your lungs into your circulatory system causing heart disease. Memphis is 62.7% african-american.
Xai has no controls or system to control the system, even with different statements pulled out, nothing has been in place and while illegally running 15 turbines on Memphis lands they ignorantly request a permit while still running them.
Without permits or pollution control it is a blatant violations of the clean air act that the epa should investigate, and the EPA has done nothing to enforce against it, espeacially through Musks influence within the USA government to stop it that way too. The Trump Administration has also helped and created the biggest deregulatory action in history - need more info on this.
EPA Minister, Lee Zeldin, stated that this act was just to create more energy for USA and give it back to America. This act eliminated services that assisted heavily polluted communities, while also cancelling billions of dollars of funding for addressing pollution. ($22 Billion dollars in grants as of May, 2025). With the EPA even stating that they are working on DOGE missions and cutting on headcounts, working head to head with Elon Musk. Even rolling back 30 air and water quality regulations to allow these large corporations to continue with less limits. Fine particulate matter restrictions have 12 micro grams per cubic meters, compared to previous restrictions of 9 micro grams per cubic meters.
Lee Zeldin continued on to mention that this act was to make USA the leading AI capital, meaning bigger data centers and stating that the EPA shouldn’t be holding it back.
Xai has made a statement to reduce smog in the area but then increase their footprint and create a larger computer center, five times the power - using 40 to 90 more turbines - enough electricity to power 40% of Memphis.
