I currently work a retail job at my local mall, I'm trying to gain more experience to sell products and work as a cashier. Anyone have any tips on how to connect with customers and engage with them about merchandise?

there are four things you should focus on:
- engagement
You must initiate to grab someone's attention. A simple "hello" or "how are you" is just enough to make yourself present.
- gain their trust
start conversation, get to them at a personal level. Maybe compliment them, ask about their day, why they're in the mall in the first place. Then, ask questions to get info about the customer that you can relate to later to sell your product.
- persuasion
sell the product, list details that might intrigue them based on what you know about them. You could say that you've personally used the product and really like it. Compare and contrast the product to other products by implying that the other products aren't as good as yours.
- Leave with a good impression
Even if they do or don't buy a product, always leave with a smile. They may remember it and tell someone they know about their experience.
This is what I learned in my marketing class when I was in CC, hope this helps!
