Acoustic analysis - bats

Today at work I've begun  acoustic analysis of bat call files. That is, files from a device that was set up outside on the edge of a forest to capture the sounds of bats. The calls are inaudible to us, but the device can pick up on them.  I then go through each call file, and manually identify which species each call file belongs to.  Almost all of the files are pure noise, and not a bat at all. The purpose of this is to see if species at risk are within the area.  It's really just understanding the shape of sound.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! During an internship this summer I got to see calls captured in real time while watching bats, it was amazing.

We were just doing it for funsies and picked up the calls of eastern red bats and big brown bats, those species are pretty common where I was at

We also did some barn counts to monitor the size of bat colonies living in nearby barns which was neat, pretty much all big brown bats, my fav species

Very nice! You get a lot of the same bat species we get. I was recently doing an analysis to figure out when the peak migration periods were for a given area, so many big browns and silver-haired bats were coming through, and the peak migration day seemed to be October 20. Keep it up with the bats, even if its for fun, they need our help.
