well boys in school age have less to none filter when they comment on somebody, it can be hurtful imo. Plus, teachers have a more open mind when it comes to girl expressing their interest than boys, idk it's like that unfortunately :((
yes i do see that as someone who is friends with guys. the most "alternative" thing that the guys do is play instruments (and they only know eye of the tiger for some reason)

my guess would be that alot of things that are common in alt styles are seen as ''feminine'' or ''gay'' by middle school kids, like makeup, painting your nails, jewelry etc. especially by middle school boys and they can be ruthless, so along with the scrutiny that being alt can get you theres probably alot more teasing + bullying that comes with being a guy doing that
yeah probably that.
