this is my big fat yap, and will be linked in my bag tour to give more information as to why i switched from my backpack to my everyday bag! also just some info and my opinion (do not expect this to have good grammar, dont expect it to be professional and i recommend looking into other sources instead of just using this one)
so in alberta teachers are upset that they are not getting paid enough and arent getting enough resources. teachers in other provinces get classroom cap sizes, meaning a class can be only a maximum of however many students per classroom, alberta does now have that. this means that teachers in alberta can have class sizes up to 40. over the years (personal experience) i have noticed that classrooms have been getting larger. i actually remember some of my class sizes because for the time, they were absurd! in grade 2 (2016) my teacher said that it was crazy to her that her class could have 25 students and that that was the most students she ever had. i have had many teachers say this exact sentence.
- 2016, grade 2.. 25 students
- 2019, grade 5, 29 students
- 2020, grade 6, 32 students
- 2022, grade 8, 38 students
- 2025, current, 40 students
class sizes are getting insane, teachers get paid based off of college/university years and amount of time worked. if a teacher gets 4 years of college/university and both teachers started working at the same school at the same time, they would both be paid the same. except! one teacher has a class of 38 and the other has a class of 23. how are teachers expected to single-handedly deal with 32 students with no education assistant in the room??
they are asking for classroom cap sizes, more teachers, higher pay and support staff
the government offered 3000 teachers and 1500 education assistants by 2028, and a 12% pay increase (over the course of 4 years)
which looks like a lot, big numbers. but not enough. 3000 teachers over 3 years means 1000 in one year. there are over 1500 public schools in alberta, meaning every school will receive like 2 fucking teachers?? what on earth is that gonna help with. same with teaching assistants, one ONE assistant per year??? this is NOT helpful
same with the pay increase, its just not enough. teachers work overtime unpaid. when they get home they grade, lesson plan, make assignments, some teachers have to reteach parts of the textbook to themselves, its a lot of work. imagine you get up at 6 in the morning, go to work at 7am to lesson plan, then at 9 deal with snotty little assholes all day who couldnt give a fuck what you are saying, then your "lunchbreak" is spent doing supervision or tutoring so stupid idiot that wasnt paying attention in your class. then when you get home you have to grade tests for 4 classes, all of which have over 30 kids in it, meaning you have to grade 120 (at the minimum) tests and then more lesson planning, answering emails, grading some stupid paper that was written by a highschooler who has the grammar of a 5th grader on crack. doesnt sound fun. AND they have to buy ALL the shit in their classrooms.
if you walk into a teachers class, every book, every poster, ever plant, everything is bought with that teachers money that they earned from doing that shitty job, just so people in the future dont end up stupid. and people are still fucking stupid anyways
so teachers need a little more than pay increase and 2 more fucking teachers. they need more fucking money to hire teachers. schools have EMPTY classrooms yet some classrooms have 40 fucking kids in them??? if schools had the money FROM THE GOVERNMENT to hire more teachers, then we would have normal class sizes because 20 of those kids could have gone to that new hire. the government is spending too much money on useless shit.
we have too many people for not enough teachers.
