This is the fourth post in a series where I listen to a random music genre and rate it after listening!
Today, my trusty wheel of fate picked "Plugg", a genre I have heard of before. What I didn't know is that it was a subgenre of trap, created by the BeatPluggz collective, which is where the name came from. The rhythms are unique, the instruments and melodies simple and minimalistic. It grew a lot from its original definition and use, gaining a couple subgenres and evolving in general. For now, I'll listen to a playlist of "OG Plugg" songs.
The first thing I heard when listening to the first song was a little sample, then some synths that really shaped the whole track. This seems to be a common theme in this genre, having rapping on top of some deep bass and chilly melodies. I can vibe out to this pretty well! It's not fast paced, intense or hard, more like ethereal and atmospheric.
It's funny, listening to this I keep hearing the "Plug!" tag the rappers used in their music. It's the same as that "PLUH" meme sound effect and I never knew they were the same thing, lol. Maybe that shows how far spread this genre is.
I personally really like the minimalistic bass and hi hat combinations. It shows you don't really have to make layers and layers of instrumental to make a good trap song. Somehow it ends up making this genre a lot more laid back than my original impression of any genre including rap. Some artists even end up sing-rapping over the lyrics instead of just rapping. It sounds great!
Going into this, I didn't expect liking this genre as much as I ended up liking it! Consistently good rhythms and beats along with top tier rapping and sometimes even singing. I could listen to this for a good while, maybe even coming back to it every once in a while. I recommend this!
8/10
