Is it odd that my math teacher calls us pet names? He says “my dear” when regarding his students, often saying “calm down my dear”. I kind of find it uncomfortable because why is a 30+ year old man called 15-16 year olds my dear😭😭. He is Indian so maybe it’s something they do culturally, but I’m not sure.
Strange teacher?

When I hear an older person saying "my dear," I automatically assume it's from endearment, like some wrinkled granny reassuring me, so I'd say it's probably nothing malevolent, or it's cultural like you said.
