Death and the Afterlife

Hi all!

Haven't posted in a while but I have been thinking about death recently. It's something I've been interested in and also have been discussing briefly in one of my classes.

In most depictions of the afterlife in art we see it as we would life. The people wear clothes or are still human, participate in common activities, and even still depict gravity. It's interesting in the way that we as humans can't imagine really much else than what we know here on earth. How do any of us really know what happens after death? There have been near death accounts of a light or even seeing nothing before waking up once again. Does what we see before death depend on our beliefs?

In history people have been known to be buried with objects of value, gold and jewels or clothing to show status, food and drink to carry with them into the afterlife etc. This status was supposed to differentiate them from the other people in the afterlife, make them more important.

The most common practice we see these days with burial is people being buried with their feet facing the east, as to be greeted by the rising sun after death. We often dress someone in their best or have them in makeup, looking their best before being put in the ground.

I am thinking about death because someone had recommended me a job at a cemetery recently. I enjoy cemeteries. i enjoy the quiet air around them and the peaceful nature surrounding it. There are people there to take care or watch over our dead which can be a nice thought.

All this to say that death is inevitable and to value life and others while they're here

I always found internet ghost videos interesting. And I mean REAL ghost footage, not ghost adventures or some high-tech ghost hunting youtubers; Like normal, everyday people capturing something weird. I always found them fascinating, because of the fact that they are all usually the same, in that they show similar activity.

A good example is the idea of shadow people; On youtube you can find countless videos of people (once again, normal people) catching footage of dark shadowy entities. And somehow, in every video they always move at inhuman speeds. I mean how do you explain that? How do all these average, regular folks seem to have the same exact footage? They didn't fake it, at least not most of them.

I think it's the fact that they all capture the same activity. There is definitely something there that we aren't seeing.

hi! i am paintplate!!!

personally, on the topic of the afterlife, it could be damn near anything, so i've simply come to the conclusion of "i'll see it when i get there!"

BUT the thought is interesting!!!
sort of on-topic but also off-topic but if a ghost is a ghost purely because they died and aren't fully like locked to haunting a place, why do they choose to dwell on earth??? as a ghost, you're unbound by the ENTIRETY OF EVERY PHYSICAL LAW IMAGINABLE! you could go ANYWHERE, including space! you could go deep into the oceans and be able to gaze upon the stars in a way and detail far greater than any living person could!!!
i will never understand why ghosts dont ever see greater potential in their positions as phantasmal beings; they seemingly have boundless explorational power! they can never get stuck anywhere, they needn't breathe, eat, sleep, or really anything
if i die and become a ghost, you bet im gonna leave the earth and never return so i can wander the endless cosmos for the rest of time C:

I feel as though ghosts may be a special occurrence. Maybe they're trapped by unfinished business like shows seem to say or maybe its a connection to a place. I think ghosts could be real but there is no definitive answer. If everyone became ghosts I would agree that they would have power to go anywhere or do anything. I liked your thoughts on it though!

If people knew what death looked like, would they still fear it? In your own opinion btw

In my opinion? I feel like many people would probably be afraid of death even knowing what happens after. Death is the ending of life as you know it and change is scary. I guess it would also depend on what the afterlife actually looked like
