Hello and welcome to another blog nobody asked for by Sunny ! Today, I'm going to be sharing my unpopular and maybe slightly controversial opinions about gyaru. Remember, these are just my opinions and if you disagree, don't take them to heart ! I'd love to hear what you think in the comments !
No. 1: I dislike the upside down peace pose
This may seem controversial but I've just never liked the pose. I feel like it got hella watered down during the gyaru resurgence of 2022/2023 and everyone and their mother started doing it. There was a reason that the director of egg magazine changed the upside down peace pose to the palm open "egg pose", which I much prefer.

No. 2: My favourite gyaru pose
While we're on the topic of popular poses amongst gyarus, my personal favourite, which I think is really underrated and not done that much anymore, is the pinkie and ring finger peace sign that was more common in the early 2000s, especially with Ka-Tan.
Pose in question:
I just think its fun and unique and it's a shame that it's not really seen anymore.
No. 3: Beginner gyarus doing a white droop is not the end of the world
I see a lot of people, especially on tik tok and pinterest, saying that white droops do exist in gyaru but then getting mad at beginner gyarus when they do a white droop that isn't executed correctly. Yes, it's hard for beginners to pull off, but how else are they supposed to practice and do it correctly other than to keep doing it ? Who cares if it doesn't look right the first couple of times, everyone starts somewhere and you can't expect someone to be a pro at gyaru make without constantly trying and improving.
No. 4: You don't need to straighten the shit out of your natural hair to be gyaru !
People think that you need perfect straightened and styled sujimori to count as gyaru, but I've seen a lot of gyaru, especially curly/coily gyaru with their natural hair out or with protective hairstyles like braids and locs. I definitely think this ideology is deeply rooted in racism, because gyaru is quite literally based on black culture, and many of the hairstyles involve curling, so why can't people who already have it naturally curled just leave it how it is ?
Examples (I made a whole pinterest board dedicated to curly/coily gyaru rep lol):

No. 5: I prefer arched brows over straight brows in gyaru.
I think this does actually depend on the substyle, because a soft and straight brow can actually fit light substyles like himekaji a bit better. However, even with hime, which is a lighter style, I think arched brows suit gyaru makeup a lot better. It goes along with the overall silhouette of the make, if that makes sense. For example, in substyles like manba you'll see the white eyelid makeup is arched at the top, so I think arched eyebrows make it look more consistent (and also fiercer and bolder seeing as that's the whole point of heavier substyles like that).
Examples:

< even here in hime you can see a bit of an arch
No. 6: I don't really like c-gyaru make
Now this isn't to say that chinese gyarus are less gyaru by any means, the makeup is just not really my style. I especially don't really vibe with the droop immediately starting at the inner corner of the eye because imo this can often make it read like dolly make and it's just not my personal taste, however I do actually appreciate the fact that they are experimenting with new ways to do gyaru makeup. I think it's good to let the style evolve, even if it isn't my cup of tea. The whole point of gyaru is to be bold and stand out, which a lot of them definitely do, even if it isn't by traditional gyaru standards. My only gripe is with the button nose contour that a lot of them do, as the whole point is to go against the beauty standard of a small button nose, so exaggerating it kind of defeats the whole point. However, it isn't really the end of the world.
No. 7: Non skinny gyarus do it just as good as skinny gyarus !
To be honest I've not really seen people say that chubby people can't be gyaru, I just haven't really seen that much rep. Besides, seeing as the whole point of gyaru is to go against traditional Japanese beauty standards (of which includes being hella skinny) I think it actually goes perfectly with gyaru !

No. 8: Gyaruo is often watered down/underappreciated
Gyaruo is definitely very underrated because I don't see the separate subs tyles of it being discussed nearly as much as gyaru. It's often all watered down to just being 'gyaruo' with no specific categories, when there definitely are a lot of separate substyles.
Examples:
- Sentaa Gai (centre guy), the male equivalent of manba

^ (On the left and right)
- Onii Kei (male equivalent of onee gyaru)

- Surfer (Couldn't find any photos)
- Rock (Couldn't find any photos)
- Biker (Again, couldn't find any photos, see how less documented gyaruo is ? It deserves some love !)
No. 9: Amekaji and Haady are nowhere near similar and I'm tired of pretending they are !
I often see a lot of people confuse amekaji and haady with each other, which makes sense if they're a beginner because I suppose they could look like each other at first if they're new, but when I look at both separately they genuinely look nothing alike to me lol. The only thing similar imo is the brightly saturated and flashy colours, which are also in styles like ganguro and manba/yamanba so not even the colours that much lol. When you actually take a second to distinguish between them you'll find that elements like the type of clothing and silhouettes are completely different. In amekaji, more often than not baggy/skater style jeans and pants will be worn (although skirts also sometimes make an appearance). However, in haady skirts are seen wayy more than pants. Also, the use of brightly coloured clothing imo is completely different. Haady includes bright colours all over head to toe, while amekaji often balances it out with blue denim jeans or white accents. Haady reminds me more of those 80s halloween costumes (not in a bad way by any means).

Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. If you wanna hear more please let me know in the comments, or let me know your own unpopular gyaru opinions. If you made it this far, I hope you have a sunny day !
