Australia under 16s social media ban

Soon in December, social media will be banned for anyone under the age of 16 in Australia. Yes, in theory this sounds good, but the way its being executed is really not. In order for people over 16 to use social media, they're going to have to upload their personal IDs to tech companies, children who can't access safe space in real life, for example LGBT kids, won't be able to find communities online, and the fact that Pornhub isn't getting banned shows this is not about protecting the kids.

Government databases already get hacked enough, and people think that its safe to upload their IDs to just regular tech companies that have less security than the government databases? Especially here in Australia, since we're the country with the 6th most amount of significant cyber attacks in the last few years.

People also need to realise that sometimes, fully banning something is not the correct choice. Yes, social media has MANY bad influences and factors, but it also has SO MANY good things too. It makes access to information easier, and helps people find community when they may not be able to in real life. For example, if an LGBT kid under 16 has no one to talk to, and they don't understand what's going on with them, without access to the internet, they won't be able to find communities or information that can help them. I'm predicting that this will lead to higher rates of mental illnesses in kids that are part of those minorities if they can't get help or community.

I think the most obvious point is that while YouTube is getting banned, Pornhub isn't. This one point alone basically shows they don't care about what the kids see online. If they really cared about protecting kids, they wouldn't let them be able to have access to pornographic content.

This ban probably will help some people, I will admit. But the negatives outweigh the positives. Yes, kids won't be addicted to social media, but people's privacy will be further breached, kids that are part of minorities will be put at more of a risk, and kids can still develop porn addictions. If it was really about the kids, they wouldn't be focusing on this type of control.

Gragh I hate living in the age where we're starting to see the consequences of the "wild west" internet it was never about the safety of the kids, I hope everyone is able to stay safe
