where are they now? popular gals edition

im almost too ashamed to post this blog... ive been gone for so long!! and its all my fault!!!! *sob*

ive let my blog go completely neglected for such a long time, please forgive me!! life has been a bit of a whirlwind these days (college, applying for jobs, settling into a new environment, the usual...), but i'm hoping to get back in the swing of things now that i have a better handle on everything! it was just so easy to put my blog out of my mind since it wasnt technically a necessity, but im planning to make it one for me! so do not despair, i plan to never neglect my blog, or you my readers ever again!! but i have to admit, the research for this one nearly killed me...

despite being plastered all over the internet and becoming the faces of gyaru, some of these gals were very hard to find information about. many of them were active online and in gyaru in the early aughts, so naturally, many have moved on and their activity is lost to time. so, short of becoming a full-fledged stalker and majorly invading the privacy of regular people (because we do have to keep in mind, many of these people are... people. theyre just like you and me, only they happened to post online and engage in a niche subculture), there just isnt much to go on. 

therefore, this is by no means a comprehensive list or life update. i tried to pick gals that already still engage with gyaru, or have an online presence that isnt strictly personal. i.e., even if i could find a gal's profiles on social media, if they are living privately and arent trying to post to an audience, i wont be posting incredibly recent photos or being too exact on what theyre doing now, nor will i be sharing where to find them. so, just keep in mind that some information will not be as up to date. many of them, as you'll see below, were gyaru during difficult seasons of their life and may not have the fondest of memories regarding gyaru. so, i encourage everyone to keep to what some kept available online and not to harass them. we should treat these people like regular human beings, because thats what they are!

also, i may do a part 2 of this blog if i get some comments about specific gals! i'll talk more about that at the end~

Harutamu (はるたむ)

Harutamu was the founding leader and tokai region leader for the largest gyarusa to date, Black Diamond. the gyarusa was founded in 2012 as a way to revive Kuro gyaru, and she became extremely influential and a style icon for Kuro gyaru and Tsuyome gyaru. Harutamu's style was characterized by her extreme nails and sujimori, often blonde, pink, or grey. she also wore lots of the brand d.i.a., and her coords often had many pink elements. in 2015, she founded the brand GALEO which catered to Kuro gals. she also appeared on the KAWAII PATEEN channel, and she filmed makeup tutorial with them. from 2015-2017, Harutamu underwent multiple cosmetic procedures, for which she (unjustifiably) received lots of backlash. since 2015-2016, her style has changed from Kuro gal to a more toned down Shiro gal style. her style is now more modern, with Reiwa influences. Harutamu is still very much gyaru, and she appears in LOALO magazine from time to time. she is active on instagram and twitter.

Gehako (げーはーこ)

Gehako was a 10th generation member and leader of the gyarusa Angeleek. her style was Manba/Yamanba. she has been featured in egg magazine, and even appeared on tv alongside Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. it seems the two are/were friends, as there are many photos of them together. she was very close with her vice leader, Tomonya (more about her below), and thought of her as an older sister. in 2011, she made a blog post saying she planned to settle down from Yamanba, but she did not officially graduate until 2015. she said she had no plans to dye her hair black or stop tanning, but as i was unable to find a photo of her (that she'd posted herself!) after 2014, that could have changed. as of 2014, she was still promoting egg magazine and had posed for a photoshoot for the final issue. she has not posted on her twitter since 2014, or her Ameblo since 2012, but they are still available for viewing.

Tomonya (ともにゃ)

Tomonya was a 10th generation member and vice leader of the gyarusa Angeleek. she was also affiliated with multiple other gyarusa, such as Rainbow Grandma. Tomonya struggled with multiple health and mental health issues, and she chronicled them in her Ameblo. at 25, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, but she received treatment and beat it. as of 2012, she graduated from Manba and toned down her look. she officially graduated from Angeleek in 2015, but it looks like she hadn't been involved well before then, since as of 2016, she was still no longer Manba. she now enjoys japanese pro wrestling and lives a private life, and generally stays off of social media. i was unable to find a photo of her past 2016 from a non-private account, so i'll only be sharing that one.

Akarin (あかり)

Akarin was a member of the gyarusa Black Diamond. she was a Ganguro/Kuro gal, and has been interested in gyaru since she was in high school. after she graduated school, she was able to express herself as a gal in more extreme ways, and was inspired by old school Manba gals. she was known for her really extreme tans, but she has since stopped tanning so aggressively. she starred in the movie GANGURO GALS RIOT in 2016, and has filmed makeup tutorials for the KAWAII PATEEN youtube channel. Akarin graduated from Black Diamond in 2017. these days, she works as a nail technician, and runs her own nail salon where she does the nails of many popular gals. she has appeared in egg magazine (during her BDia days), and sometimes appears in LOALO magazine and attends their events. she is active on instagram and twitter.

Barbie

Barbie, also known as Delandra, was a member of Black Diamond. she is by far the most controversial gal on this list, so i want to be careful with what a share since a lot of what can be found online boils down to racist/misogynistic attacks. she moved to japan from america, and joined Black Diamond in ~2014 (i was unable to find a specific date/year). she has appeared in Soul Japan, and was featured in Black Diamond's "AVANT GYARUDE" music video. she also worked at Black Diamond's Ganguro Cafe. it is alleged that she forced her way into Black Diamond and was not well liked by any of the members due to her behavior, and the fact that she could not speak japanese and made no attempt to learn. it is also alleged that she was in japan illegally, and frequently posted on craigslist to find a husband so she could stay in japan. she has also allegedly (but this is basically confirmed) scammed multiple people in multiple different communities and stole their money. she has received lots of backlash for her actions, as well as for undergoing cosmetic surgery and engaging in sex work (two things i dont find reasonable things to be hated on for at all). more information about her controversies can be found via a google search, since i don't feel comfortable giving direct exposure to some of the sites she's talked about on. she has since moved back to america, and is a game developer and voice actor according to her instagram.

Erimokkori (ぇりもっこ)

Erimokkori was a former member/leader of Black Diamond, and was briefly a member of their idol group, Black Diamond -from 2000-. she also worked at Black Diamond's Ganguro Cafe. in 2017, she gave an interview where she states she had been gyaru, specifically Ganguro, since she was 13. in that same interview, she said she was Ganguro because no one else did it anymore, and that she may be the last gal. her style was very extreme, and she included many Ganguro, Manba, and Yamanba elements into her coords. in 2018, she left Black Diamond -from 2000- and graduated. recently, Erimokkori has started a youtube channel (although it has not been active in 4 years), and has a twitter account (also inactive as of 2023). she has seemingly left Ganguro entirely, going for a considerably more toned-down Shiro gal look.

Kyon (きょん)

Kyon was a 7th generation Angeleek member, and a former vice leader. she graduated on december 9th, 2007. during Angeleek's hayday, she appeared in a tv program. after her graduation, she toned down her look and got married in 2009. she was still gal and very active in the community, still attending Angeleek events, hanging out with friends, and taking purikura. she was very active on her Ameblo, chronicling her daily life as a married woman and gyaru. in 2010, Kyon announced that she was pregnant with her first child, who was born the same year. her Ameblo went inactive around 2014. at some point, she and her husband divorced after she, in her words, decided she wasnt cut out for living with someone else and decided to be a single mother. in 2021, Kyon announced that she was pregnant with her second child. although to some she does not look outwardly gyaru these days, she still interacts with the gyaru community and is even actively appearing in the AbemaTV series, Hyena of Love, where she discusses her time in Angeleek. she is very active on instagram, where she shares photos of her and her children, and shares her life as a "single mother by choice" to encourage others.

Ayuyun (ぁゆゆん)

Ayuyun was a member of Black Diamond, and she also worked at their Ganguro Cafe. she had been gyaru since she was in the sixth grade. she is a die-hard Ayumi Hamasaki fan, and often retweeted things having to do with her when she was still active on twitter. she has appeared on the KAWAII PATEEN channel, and in 2017, she appeared on a FujiTv special program Cardboard of Love. also in 2017, Ayuyun released a statement on twitter that she was leaving gyaru to get married and had moved back to her hometown. afterwards, she set up an online store where she sold all of her gyaru clothing and items. in 2018, a photoshoot and mini-interview she did in 2017 was posted, where she was candid about her experience as a gal. she has not posted on her twitter since 2018, and seems to be living a quiet life away from social media and in marital bliss. good for her!

Yurutan (ゆるたん)

Yurutan was a member of the gyarusa ViViD, and a japanese pro wrestler (here's a video of her in action). her career debut as a wrestler was on july 7th, 2014, and she retired on july 25th, 2015. she also retired from ViViD around this time (2014/2015). she got married in 2015, and in 2024, she announced that she was 5 months pregnant after struggling with infertility. Yurutan is still gyaru and active on instagram, where she posts about her life as a gal, dog mom, and now, a gyaru mama!
