Hi, if you guys don’t know, I’m Hispanic. My grandparents immigrated from Mexico to America, raised my mom on the border, and now my mom is raising me on the border :)
Growing up, I spoke both English and Spanish. I went to an English speaking school, and transferred to a Texas-based online school that I currently still go to (so less Spanish speakers). I still speak Spanish and continue to learn it since my grandma doesn’t know enough English to communicate with me but whenever I forget a word, I use a translator…if there are several types of Spanish, why tf does am I only ever given at max 2 options??? Like my Spanish is NOT perfect so obvi I go around voluntarily taking lessons, classes, and asking stuff about Spanish so I can learn. My grandma is in her mid 70’s and going deaf, like if she doesn’t have her hearing aids I can scream at the top of my lungs and she still won’t hear, if I want to speak to her in in-depth conversations the time is literally now and it’s kinda hard to do that when my learning sources are all ignorant asf ToT
Like there’s Mexican Spanish, Spain Spanish, TexMex Spanish (what I grew up with), etc. Google it, there are sooo many.
Also, another thing, if you only speak one language, you only understand an English word when you have the accent on it lol. I say language and not Spanish because apparently this is like a culture-wide phenomenon lmao. I saw videos of people giving examples by speaking with their parents or grandparents where they’d say something with the American accent, the parents/grandparents get confused, they repeat it with the (ethnicity) accent, the parents/grandparents understand. It reminded me of my own grandma and it’s one of the reasons why I find being Hispanic really weird- or not weird but like fascinating?
And it’s not just those two, it’s also the little tidbits I learn about the culture. Like in elementary school we were taught about dia de los muertos, sugar skulls, and stuff but again, I’m now in a very non-Hispanic school where the only place Hispanic culture is present year-round is Spanish class. So NOW, if I find out little mexi-facts™️ it’s out in the wild. For example: Xolo’s. They’re a type of dog and the legend around them is if they’re well taken care of, they’ll guide you through the afterlife when you pass (assuming the dog passes first-)
Well yeah, that’s kinda it. If y’all read this far, tysm and I hope you have a great day. Love you guys<333
