The Problem With iPad Kids & Roblox's Predator Problem (DEEP-DIVE) Capitalism, Psychology, True Crime... Today I talk to you about, You are sitting at a restaurant trying to enjoy your meal when you hear a piercing scream. The toddler at the next table over has just decided to throw a tantrum, blowing their vocal cords out for the whole restaurant to hear. You sigh in exasperation. You did not expect screams to be the soundtrack to your meal. Then, just as suddenly as it started, the noise stops. Confused, you look over. The toddler is slack-jawed, white-knuckling an iPad with a chunky green case. YouTube Kids blares while their eyes stare an inch from the screen. No more tantrum. Chances are, you have witnessed this phenomenon too. It is what Generation Z calls an “iPad kid,” The term "iPad kids" refers to a generation of children, primarily from Generation Alpha (born 2010 onwards), who are perceived to have excessive screen time on devices like iPads, often at the expense of other activities and social interaction. This dependency can cause major problems in their cognitive, linguistic, and socio-emotional development!
One study found that 65% of parents played outside every day during their childhood while the same is true for only 30% of their children. Another study found that children who engage in excessive screen time are less imaginative, less empathic, and have shorter attention spans than those with limited screen time, some of these iPad kids learn languages measurably slower than others because they miss out on crucial human interaction. This lack of both language and social interaction may mean the child will be worse at communicating overall, According to an analysis of the Quebec Longitudinal Study on Child Development, for every hour 2 year olds watch television, their participation in class decreases by 7% and 6% in math mastery units when they reach fourth grade. Other studies corroborate this since they found that the more time spent in front of a screen, the lower the academic performance, “She’s totally unresponsive when she’s on the iPad playing Minecraft. It’s as if she leaves us for another planet,” one mom says.

A 2013 study from Common Sense Media, studies the effects of media and technology on young users, found that 38% of US kids younger than two are using tablets or smartphones—possibly even before they can string a sentence together. The reality is that when you ask parents how the devices are being used, it is mostly to occupy or distract the child who are being babysat by tablet computers, algorithms have become such a problem that 33 states joined forces to file a lawsuit against Meta. They are claiming that Meta is intentionally using manipulative algorithms to get young people addicted to their platforms. Further, they are accusing Meta of specifically designing their algorithms to ensnare children and teenagers in toxic rabbit holes of damaging content and of violating privacy laws protecting minors. One attorney general from Colorado even compared Meta’s schemes to those of Big tobacco: “Meta chose to maximize its profits at the expense of public health" Roblox is the top gaming platform for kids and teens, Roblox has more than 82 million active users daily and reports that 20% are under the age of 9! Louisiana sues Roblox for allegedly failing to protect children, A class action lawsuit against Roblox accusing the company of failing to warn parents about widespread NOT good content for children on its platform, The complaint alleges that to maximize users and revenue – Roblox fails to warn and misleads parents about the widespread inappropriate content children often encounter in the virtual world. The lawsuit states that Roblox specifically misleads parents about the efficacy of its filtering technologies and its ability to make the site safe and appropriate for children, ETC!!!
