let me start by saying that i am not the arbiter of alt culture, this is my opinion and you have the right to disagree. with that being said, what does it mean to be alt? it's actually pretty simple, alternative just means to be against the status quo. a commonly used example of this would be the punk scene, a leftist movement which began during a predominantly conservative era. listen up because this is very important, ALMOST EVERY ALT SUBCULTURE IS DERIVED FROM PUNK!!!
recently i've seen a sudden rise in "alternative" right wingers. a very common argument i hear all too often is "conservatism is the new punk because the status quo is to be left wing." remind me again which party trumps administration represents? who holds the majority in the senate, house of reps, and the supreme court? that's not even factoring in other countries either. i think the logic here is that companies change their profile pictures to a rainbow variant during pride month (rainbow capitalism, but that's a whole other can of worms), so that must mean the mainstream narrative is to be a leftist? it's all performative activism, do you seriously believe that the celebrity who had to come out and say "guys i actually love black people!!" after a racist tweet from 2012 resurfaced is a tankie or an active member of antifa? IF ANYTHING they would be a liberal, which nowadays is considered a right wing ideology. leftism has never been, and never will be mainstream.
unfortunately it seems that the words "punk," "goth," "emo," and "scene" have all been reduced to nothing but depop and shein searches rather than ideologies/music scenes. you can dress and believe whatever the hell you want, but i will not take you seriously if you try to convince me that you're goth after voting for trump.
that's enough of my schizo ramblings, i'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on this subject!

Oh brother here we go again..
Being against the status quo does not mean being against conservatism, especially since the only accepted stance in modern society is leftism. If you're a leftist, most likely you'll fit in with most people, but if you're a right winger, you'll be treated like an outcast.
Punk was about rebelling against the norm, but that didn't only mean leftists, but also right wingers who didn't fit in with the stereotypes they forced on people back in the day.
Also, if you can't be right winger and alt, then what about bands like Skillet, The Ramones, Flyleaf? What about Michale Graves? You're saying all these people are posers!? I dunno, they're pretty huge names in the alt music genre man..
please define "leftism" and explain to me how it is "the only accepted stance in modern society."

I disagree since by using the "alternative just means to be against the status quo" is contradictory.
Both left wing and right wing are against the centrist aka status quo.
However, you use just trump, I suppose that means in the states conservatives can be alt if they aren't trumpist.
Trump is very authoritarian conservatist, i'd say just by using him as the mantle piece is flawed.
In EU you can be moderately concervative still right, far right ancap rightwing libertarianism the latter is considered far right here yet antifacist however it's considered right to rightwing in the states.
My point is, being alt is being fundementally different from the regular populace.

the current administration being right wing does not mean all right wingers agree with the current administration. most conservatives i've seen online are opposed to trump.
when did i say most right wingers agree with the current administration? they're still right wing either way
by jacob; ; Report
yes and so if they are right wing and are opposed to the current establishment that makes them alternative

to be alt you have to believe in dissolving social norms. if you ideologically line up with the party trying to conserve traditional values, how would that make you alt?
by jacob; ; Report
the republican party has conserved nothing. even the most die-hard "conservatives" like charlie kirk are trying to push for the acceptance of homosexuality within the conservative movement. i wrote a blog explaining how western society is culturally left wing and the election of donald trump does not immediately reverse society's cultural attitudes of the past 20 years

im still not sure what alt mean. the culture right now is left leaning so punk would be anti-establishment right leaning right?
Left leaning where? It's just influenced by "left" movements on a surface level, specifically in clothing styles. People consume and absorb the surface of the movement/culture but not the essence or ideology that started that culture/movement.

why do you think the culture is left wing??
by jacob; ; Report
But punks aren't just against the establishment, they are fundamentaly left leaning, or at least progressist because they have non-conservative views about society. Like both men and women wear the same makeup/hair to defy gender norms. By essence a conservative would never do that, because they are in favor of the conservation of a traditional society, with traditional values and gender norms, so not alt at all.
