Abraham van hellsing and other monster slayers

A man of science and faith. A warrior of intellect and spirit.

Doctor. Professor. Occultist. Vampire Hunter.

He is the eternal adversary of darkness.

Abraham Van Hellsing. vampire hunter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He combines science, religion, and ancient knowledge to lead the fight against Count Dracula and protect humanity from supernatural evil.

In this blog I want to show how the most famous fictional vampire hunter may have his real counterparts.

 ♱  Dom Augustin Calmet

(1672–1757) was a French Benedictine monk and historian best known for his scholarly work Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires (Treatise on Apparitions of Spirits and Vampires) published in 1746

Calmet cataloged numerous accounts of what were believed to be supernatural phenomena. His work became foundational in how vampires and related folklore were studied intellectually. Rather than treating them purely as superstition, Calmet’s approach grounded vampire phenomena in systematic enquiry

 ♱ Gerard van Swieten

(1700–1772) was a Dutch-born physician, librarian, and reformer who became one of the most influential figures in the Austrian Enlightenment, particularly under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of the Habsburg Empire. In 1755, he wrote a report titled "Abhandlung des Daseyns der Gespenster" ("Treatise on the Existence of Ghosts") in which he debunked vampire myths as superstition.

there is no clear confirmation that one of these two is in any way related to the fictional hunter but many literary scholars believe that this two helped inspire the concept of Van Helsing

⛥A long time ago, to become a monster hunter, you had to be born in the right place at the right time.

✞ Born as shaman:

Shamans are spiritual practitioners found in many indigenous cultures worldwide — from Siberia and Mongolia to the Americas, Africa, and parts of Asia.

Shamans were often the protectors of their communities from harmful spirits or monsters. They could exorcise, banish, or appease these entities using rituals, chants, and spirit journeys.Sometimes they entered trance states to battle malevolent spirits in the spirit realm, defending the village or individuals from spiritual harm. They might use talismans, sacred objects, or incantations as weapons or tools to combat these forces.

✞ Born as Benedanti (holy warriors)

Benedanti means “the blessed ones”

claimed to be spiritually gifted individuals who practiced a form of folk magic or shamanic-like ritual to protect their community. They believed they were engaged in nightly spiritual battles against evil forces or witches.
According to testimonies, their souls would leave their bodies during the night and ride through the countryside on animals like wolves or horses

✞ Just born as twins (seriously)

being born as twins carries special magical or spiritual significance

In many traditions, twins are thought to share a unique spiritual bond or even a shared soul. Some cultures believe twins can communicate with spirits more easily or possess special powers.

Some examples

(Nigeria)Twins (called Ibeji) are considered sacred, believed to bring good fortune or misfortune. Special rituals honor them.

(Ancient Greece)Castor and Pollux were twin brothers worshiped as protectors of sailors.

✞ Being born in event of the Sabbat—a term related to witchcraft traditions

The Sabbat is a term from European witchcraft lore, referring to a gathering or meeting of witches, often held in secret and usually at night. These events were believed (especially by inquisitors, clergy, and demonologists) to be full of magic, rituals, and spirit activity, and were considered heretical or diabolical by the Church.

They might have been seen as having magical powers from birth, able to communicate with spirits or demons.

⛥To be a monster slayer you dont need to born in specific way you can made yourself a hunter just like:

♱ 陰陽道(Onmyōdō- literally “The Way of Yin and Yang”)

traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology and system of divination, based on: Yin-Yang, astronomy, five elements, folk believes

Used spells, charms, and paper talismans to banish evil spirits or shield homes. Advanced Onmyōji were said to summon shikigami — spiritual beings or familiars created from paper, words, or spiritual energy They dealt with yōkai, ghosts, nature spirits, and vengeful souls (onryō).

 ♱ warrior clergyman

someone who is both a religious figure and a trained fighter or military leader — has existed in many cultures throughout history. These figures embody the fusion of spiritual authority and martial power. They might be holy protectors, militant monks, crusaders, or spiritual generals.

Knights TemplarTook vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, like monks — but were heavily armed and fought in holy wars

Warrior Monks Famous for their battles during the Heian and Kamakura periods.Powerful temples like Enryaku-ji even had private armies.

Shamanic Warrior In some indigenous cultures (like Siberian, Mongolian, or Native American tribes), shamans also acted as protectors. They defended the spiritual balance of the tribe and sometimes fought in wars — using spiritual magic and physical force

Prince-Bishops In medieval Europe, some bishops held not just religious power, but secular rule over territories — including commanding armies

Many of these groups have helped create legendary figures in culture such as Vampire Hunter D, the Belmont family, Betty Vampire Hunter, Blade and many others. Maybe some day you will join the hunt. Fear no monster. Forge your own legend and let no beast rule the night.
