The Hurricane Katrina Disaster Files (DEEP-DIVE) Capitalism & True Crime... Today I talk about, Late August, 2005. The city of New Orleans is hit by Hurricane Katrina, taking more than 1,800 lives and caused $100 billion in property damage.  The storm’s damage was greatly exacerbated by the failures of the united states government, the local governments, and the Bush administration, The government was unprepared for Katrina even though it was widely known that such a hurricane was probable, and weather forecasters had accurately predicted the advance of Katrina before landfall! Hurricane Katrina was largely a man-made disaster and less a natural disaster The levees failed because of human error, Many of the levees and floodwalls were not built to the required specifications, with some being too low or having inadequate foundations.  A head of water almost 20 feet high destroys houses in the immediate vicinity of the breach and pushes others off their foundations.

Amid post-Katrina generosity came $1.4B in fraud Hurricane Katrina brought out the worst in people cheats and fly-by-night contractors with their hands on some of the billions of relief and insurance dollars, Greed appeared to overcome common sense and empthy for many. Over the last 10 years, mayors, county officials, FEMA officials, police officers — at least one police chief — pastors, prison inmates, and people from Alabama to Hawaii have been busted for what would become synonymous with the storm: Katrina fraud, Money intended for victims paid for tattoos, massages, yachts, an engagement ring, a $200 bottle of Dom Perignon at a Hooters, a divorce attorney, strippers, gambling, hotel rooms for $438 a night in New York City and extended stays in Hawaii. More than 1,170 state and federal inmates received assistance payments of more than $10 million, The U.S. Department of Justice said it had charged 1,439 people through 2011 in cases nationwide related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, The GAO has estimated up to $1.4 billion of the initial $7 billion FEMA provided in Katrina assistance was lost to fraud. As of last year, GAO reported only $60 million had been recovered, And while the American Red Cross hasn’t provided a clear estimate of losses for $2 billion in Katrina donations it collected, fraud appeared to be rampant in early efforts. Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, first elected in 2002 as a crusader against corruption, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for bribery, money laundering, tax violations and fraud. Prosecutors say his malfeasance began before Katrina but picked up pace when billions of dollars in disaster recovery money and projects rolled in, Federal officials say Nagin took at least $500,000 in under-the-table money in exchange for several contractors getting millions of dollars’ worth of city contracts, Beyonce's “Formation” Exploits New Orleans’ Trauma,

The New Orleans Police Department was troubled long before Hurricane Katrina In a September 4 2005 incident on the Danzinger Bridge, four officers shot at unarmed African American pedestrians Allegations followed that NOPD officers assigned to investigate the shootings instead tried to cover up the incident In the wake of tragedy, most Americans would like to think that the race of the victims would not matter And yet, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina exposed the bitter truth — that Black victims of natural disasters are routinely mistreated. With much of the city flooded and out of electricity, citizens did not have access to regular meals or clean water. They watched society fall apart at the seams. A Hate crime committed on September 1st in New Orleans, a few days after the storm made landfall. Ronald J. Bourgeois, Jr. agreed that they would use force to keep out African Americans from their neighborhood.” He also told a neighbor, “Anything coming up this street darker than a brown paper bag is getting shot,” The working-class poor, overwhelmingly African-American, including the elderly and the sick, residents of hospitals and care-homes, were abandoned without water, food, medicines, electricity, or clear information about effective relief, During all the chaos going down Bush flew off to California to make another speech justifying the war in Iraq! The state prioritized the recovery of the city's tourism industry and real estate market post-Katrina, sparking waves of gentrification and mass displacement that have positioned Black New Orleanians in a fight for their lives and in defense of their homes. some residents were able to return and rebuild, others were displaced due to increased housing costs, ETC!!!
