As if this wasn't already stupid enough only happening in the UK, this shit is spreading to the U.S. Starting august 13th, peoples youtube accounts will be reviewed by fucking AI to determine wether you are 18 or not (it doesn't matter if your email states that you are above 18). The AI will review what videos you watch and what you search for. If you like watching animation or possibly gameplay, the AI will most likely view you as a child, and restrict you from youtube. To get your account back, you will have to provide either an ID, credit card, or a photo of your face.
As for spotify, i dont even really know how theyre going to be reviewing accounts. Like if you listen to one direction or something are they labeling you a child?? i dont fucking know. but i guess if they think you're a child, they can possibly permanently terminate your account. There are so many reasons as to why this is stupid.
1. its MUSIC. why do we have to verify our age for listening to MUSIC?? newsflash, music isnt just for adults.
2. there is already a spotify kids app. if you dont want your child listening to inappropriate/explicit music, just give them spotify kids. its not that hard.
3. if you dont want your child using spotify kids and instead the normal spotify app but still dont want them listening to explicit content: go into account settings, open "content and display", and turn off the explicit option. to turn it back on requires a password.
this is NOT about safety. this is about CENSORSHIP AND CONTROL.

i absolutely agree. especially with the state of the us where things like satire and political shows cant criticise the current government. either way, the control of peoples online activity as well as feeding everything to FUCKING AI? this is actual state surveillance and control. most authoritarian states start justifying things more and more with the excuse of protecting children. with the rise of facism recently, this isnt any different.

ts is so horrible man. idk what I'm gonna do atm. if this starts in the U.S then I won't be able to do anything w/o being watched???? with ai???? the fuck??? and I'm giving them more permission to sell my data???
I've searched abt it a bit online and most ppl r saying that minors (and people in general) should resort to older forms of media like mp3 players/dvds/physical media, but I don't think I'll be able to convince my mom that a purchase of a mp3 player would make any sense. not only that, but albums are fucking expensive dawg.
might just start drawing album covers or smth
this sucks :(
buying/making cds would be a great option if u wanna listen to music! you can get cds + jewel cases for them from staples or amazon. all u need after that is a cd burner (they can unfortunately be a little pricey). and if u need a cd player, search tech sections at thrift stores. they will most likely be priced from $10-$25 depending on the type. as for dvds and mp3's, maybe search ebay?? facebook marketplace would most likely have some options too.
this online "safety" act thing sucks so much. real people arent even looking over out shit its just AI. basically our every move on the internet is being tracked. they say they want us to be more "safe" then monitor everything we do to the point of no privacy. how are we supposed to trust the government like this?

Yeah, im very aware of this. And like you say it's very clear about control and censorship because someone their preferences. I'm not giving my ID to YouTube since I basically live in that app. Because I knew that AI is shit and can easily flag anyone who is underage. Plus YouTube is clearly greedy and want all information about you. So I'm not giving YouTube my ID because of that. So respectfully I hate UK law lmao. Even though I'm not living in UK
youtube is an extremely greedy company. they dont care about the "safety" of their users. if they did, why not take the porn ads off the website? you're the ones that allow it anyways. the companies have to pay YOU for their ads to be on youtube.

"freedom of speech" until it comes to minors.
"freedom of speech" until a minor wants to act like a normal human being in the world. this shit is so fucking stupid.

I love how we need safety online but not in real life where our government is taking away things we need to learn and cope, to make friendships. We need safety online but definitely not irl where the government is corrupt. It's depressing a 13 year old feels like they need more safety from the government irl than they do online.

What??? That's actually crazy! I'm 17 and I admittedly mostly watch "kid" content (animations, comic dubs, theory videos) but they better not flag me as a kid after I turn 18!!!
im just gonna start filling my shit up with politics and news so hopefully that'll help a bit on august 13th 🥀🥀 (I DONT WANT TO GIVE YOUTUBE MY FACE WHAT THE FUCK)

I am genuinely so scared to use YouTube that I have to make a second email. I really really really do not want to lose my YouTube channel because of this stupid “online safety (*censorship*) act.”

so many youtube channels will be affected in this. its very understandable to be scared. making a second email is a wise action. its not what everyone WANTS to do, but its unfortunately the best option if you want to keep using youtube. i hope ur channel isnt affected by this :/
