I found a survey online for an ex conservative now leftist and for baby leftists so thought I would fill it out so you guys can get to know my politics better
- What was the turning point that shifted my views from conservative to leftist
It was realizing I was in echo chamber with my conservative views and wanted more left leaning content creators to check out to see what they were about
2. Was it a gradual or sudden change?
It was gradual, basically conservative, liberal then leftist
3. Did any specific media, person or event influence my transformation?
YouTuber Second Thought
4. How did your values or moral framework evolve during my shift?
I used to only care about me and what impacts me but now I care about what impacts my fellow Americans and people around the world
5. How do you reconcile your past ideology with current beliefs?
I see it as who I was in the past and now I’m a different person ideologically
6. What aspects of conservative still resonate with you if any?
None
7. Do you think conservatives are misunderstood by the left?
They can be, most of my experience they’re spot on
8. What do you think is the most dangerous idea in modern conservatism?
The support for fascism and being anti human rights
9. Are there any conservative thinkers you like and respect?
None
10. How did your family and friends react to your shift?
Friends were happy, a friend I had in college that was a Trump supporter was bummed and my family they didn’t know to the extent I’m on the left
11. What’s the most surprising aspect of being a leftist?
I expected conservatives to not like me but I was naive didn’t realize liberals wouldn’t like me either
12. Do you feel politically “at home” on the leftist or are there still conflicts?
I do feel at home, no conflicts at all
13. What are your thoughts on capitalism vs socialism now?
I see capitalism as exploitative as a system and I want workers to own the means of production and I see socialism as the best economic system
14. Where do you stand on issues like healthcare, immigration and policing
Acab, free healthcare for all and pro immigration and fuck ice
15. What advice would I give to someone questioning their conservative beliefs?
Watch debates online. As much as I don’t listen Destiny during the early 2000’s Destinys debate with NoBS helped me realize that the conservatives I liked were dumb asses. Don’t jump into leftism right away just watch debates or videos talking about why conservatism is bad or why Trump is bad depending on what kind of conservative you are.
16. How can the left better engage with conservatives online?
I engage with conservatives by asking questions if it’s a good faith conservative who wants to understand my beliefs. Why do you support this? Do you think Trump does___ Did you know___ etc I’ve given analogies sometimes that have made some conservatives understand a point or position I have.
17. What misconceptions about the left that turned out to be false?
Leftists are tolerant. We don’t tolerate, homophobes, racists, Nazis etc
Part 2: for baby leftists
1. What drew you to leftist ideas in the first place?
I wanted to explore the far left since both liberals and conservatives told me the far left is bad so I went and explored leftism
2. What makes liberals different from leftists?
Well liberals are pro capitalist while leftists are not. One is for preserving the status quo the other side is against that
3. Are my beliefs motivated by social justice issues, moral values or economic critique
All of the above. I want everyone to have their basis needs met, I want the liberation of all oppressed people and hope the contradictions with capitalism that Americans will notice will lead us to a revolution and change of the system
4. What’s one belief that I hold now that I didn’t hold in the past?
Being against capitalism
5. What are my currently reading, watching or listening to grow politically?
I watched a lot of Second Thought and Hakim and I currently am reading a book called, socialist reconstruction. I also enjoy reading books about North Korea, Cuba etc and biographies from Castro. I also read the Communist Manifesto
6. Have I started any political conversations with family or friends?
Family no, forget about them but one of my friends yes since she didn’t know what socialism was and I explained it to her and she agreed with it
7. Are you involved in any activism or organizing?
I do activism online and I try to go to protests but the last one the no kings protest fell on the day I had a long shift from work which lasted from 9:45-3:00 and 9:45 pm to 6:00 am so I was too tired and slept in. I did attend a queer liberation march in nyc briefly before heading to the parade
